Kernel panic from install CD
...erday I upgraded one of them, and got the dreaded Kernel panic.
Something about powernowk8. I could boot up with the old kernel, though.
I know I have to put in a bug report on this, will do shortly, but first
wanted to try a fresh install on another DecTOP. At the prompt, I
specified: linux askmethod
After it loaded the kernel, it died with the same Kernel panic. This is
bad. Very bad. If they fix the kernel (when, please?), I will need to
make a new install CD (how?). Yes, I can put the drive in another
system, do the install, move the drive, then run system-config-display,
but I was...

non-graphics install or fix xorg.conf?
Trying the to install on the OQO, and hitting up against one problem I

is its screen size.
So I could install using the text installation except...
What is the command line for text install and askmethod so I can use
HTTP to access my local repo? What do I add to 'linux askmethod'? And
if I go the text install route, can I do all of my custom disk
partitioning? I seem to recall from when I fell intotext install on a
system without enough memory, that I could not work with LVM in text...

What happened to the RescueCD?
...s -
So what happened to the RescueCD ISO?... i'm not finding it under the
...centos/4.4/isos/ dir, as i believe it generally has been previously.
At my office, we have a local mirror, and i've always just burned the
RescueCD ISO and booted with that. At the prompt i supply "linux
askmethod" and then later reference our local mirror to do an install or
upgrade. The RescueCD is (or was) particularly convenient, because it's
small & quick to download & burn.
Is there a simple alternative that i'm overlooking?
Thanks

Centos 5 install failed compounded - no CD?
First off, there is no access into the bios on this unit It will boot
from the hard drive or a USB CD.
I have a USB DVD/CDRW. The system will boot from it.
But if I just press enter to install off the CD, I end up at the
askmethod menu.
I press the local CD option and am told, no CD.
Help?

Failed VNC Install
Installing a new system, I launched the install:
linux vnc
I was then able to connect with a VNC client and run the install, really cool.
All went well until the actual installation started. I saw the
formatting of the swap partition, then the root file system and then I
was suddenly disconnected.
On the console was the following message:

CentOS 4.5 FTP install
I'm having trouble getting CentOS 4.5 to install via FTP.
I have a local FTP server with a mirror of 4/os/i386. I boot from
the first CentOS 4.5 CD and enter 'linux askmethod'. I choose the
FTP installation method and DHCP for the IP configuration. At the
FTP Setup screen I enter the IP address of my server and the path
of the i386 directory.
Selecting OK there takes me to the CD Found screen that asks if I
want to perform a media test. Skipping the media test t...

Disabling selinux at boot command prompt
I noticed in 4.92 there is no disabling selinux at install.
It is now a firstboot option which then requires a reboot.
Is there anyway to disable selinux at the boot install prompt
so after the firstboot screens it wont reboot again?
I presently install with "linux askmethod" so I can select NFS install.
Thanks,
Jerry

Cent OS 5 server setup walkthrough
I have just finished setting up and configuring a server running CentOS 5
with 2 Xen VMs. This article describes my journey through this, including
the problems I faced and there solutions. It documents the installation of
CentOS 5, from a single CD, adding software, configuring squid, NFS, Xen,
etc and sharing yum cache and lot more!
I request everyone to check this out and tell me what should I

Installing CentOS over LAN
I want to set up a server that will do network installs of CentOS,
perhaps through NFS.
Ideally, I'd put a CentOS in the CD of the target computer, I boot
it off of that CD, and then the rest is done over my network and
with the server.
Has anyone done that and published it? Where can I find docs?

Newbie question: need assistance setting up a boot menu for linux dist + win98
...perience with Linux was
vanilla installs with no actuall modifications for the install process.
I believe the process itself is fairly simple, as it only requires setting
up a boot menu and then run the
boot images of the distribution selected.
When I start the linux install, I choose "linux askmethod" and then being
prompted for the install method FTP, HTTP, CD or NFS Image.
I have no need for an auto install beyond that part.
All I need is to reach this screen, and I'll populate the values manually.
I just need a simple menu at the onset of the boot that will ask me: "Which

Install from a USB CDrom?
OK, this is getting ridiculous.
A relatively new HP NC4010 (1 year old). A maybe not the newest
Storix USB CD/R-DVD drive.
Of course the HP has no problem booting up off the CDrom. But then I
get that blasted dialog of where are my install.
So I go through the list and find a USB storage driver.
It doesn't help.
I do have a USB 2.5" drive case that I can put a drive in with the

Can CentOS 4 be installed from CD1 only?
Hi. I'm installing CentOS far from home and forgot the CDs... I don't
have time to download all 4, what are my best options? I can download CD
1 and perhaps 2 - is that enough? Is there a way to install directly
over the internet from one of the mirrors?
Thanks.

Boot diskette for install CD
(New to CentOS and just joined the list.)
Is there a boot diskette image for the install CD? I want to install
CentOS in a classroom that does not have CD boot enabled. I couldn''t
find one on the install CD, although it did have a USB flash drive boot
image. I''m pretty sure that the machines in the classroom are too old to
be able to boot from USB flash drives. (I will check on

Centos installed on OQO mod 2
Since I have a four of these units, and the XP recovery CD, I figured,
"ah give it a go."
And going through the Centos wiki, I found a simple piece I was
missing: "linux text askmethod". There were a few problems I had with
the text install:
Disk Druid does not work with LVM partitions, much, in text mode. I was
able to increase the size of the swap partition though...
I missed the setup for a user other than root. I will have to do that
separately.
System came up i...
