Well other than the name, it does not have anything in common with DVD
because IIRC it's a Magneto Optical drive ... totally different Tech.

BTW, it is 100% ALU and a major strain on the ALU LOAD.
In other words, it's not a good benchmark for...

Multiple system updates
This is a question for you guys out there that have a bunch of similar
configured systems out there... How do you handle your updates? I do not mean
the technical level, but from the logistics. No updates? Just run yum by cron
and grab the latest of the web and trust the developers that it works? Deploy
only certain packages automatically (i.e. omit kernel updates)? run your own

Yep - but what is your point with bringing that up?

Opteron Mobo Suggestions
I've been planning to build a dual Opteron server for awhile. I'd like
to get people's suggestions on a suitable motherboard.
I've looked at the Tyan K8SE (S2892) and K8SRE (S2891) but would like to
find more Linux-specific experiences with these boards.
Some features I expect are at least 4 SATA (SATA-300?) ports, serial
console support in the BIOS, USB 2.0 and IEEE-1394

It's all speculation at this point. But there are _several_ factors.
But I'm sure the first time Intel saw AMD's x86-64/PAE52 presentation,
the same thing popped into my mind that popped

There _are_ systems with hot-swap CPUs, memory and/or, PCI[-X] slots.
They are _not_ commodity and pricey, and require OS-level support.
In fact, I believe Linux 2.6 has some support for

SATA vs. SAS
I have 8 WD SATA HDD with raid ready (3mbps) hard disks on a 8 port 3ware
controller.(on raid 5.) Does anyone have a comparison on SATA raid and SAS
raid disk. As you know SAS disk are very expensive and I would like to know
from experts in the list who could suggest which of the following would be
the best.
Option 1) 2 servers each having 2.0TB raid disk with SAS drives, 2GB ram and

Intel Atom systems?
Any comments on CentOS 5 on Intel Atom CPUs?
I need to build a couple of inexpensive systems that will be used
primarily as gateway/firewall systems with OpenVPN, and need
recommendations in reliable hardware platforms. These will need
two NICs.
