arkeia
I think it was this list that someone had said they were using arkeia.
Could that person or anyone for that matter who is using arkeia please
contact off list?
Sorry if I was mistaken. -m

backup to disk
...for backing up user data to disk. My
user data is all in /home. I'm also interested in what folks are doing
for things backing up os and configs.
Any pointers on setting up rsync, cpio, etc would be appreciated.
Pointers to good how-to's especially welcome.
Currently we're using Arkeia Network Backup (commercial product with
which I am in no way affiliated), and it's great, but with disk space so
cheap, I'd love to be able to take my current non-raid setup and find a
way to get up and running quickly in the case of some failures.
Thanks in advance,

Ext3 filesystem access after downgrade from v4.2 to v3.6
I need to downgrade a system from Centos x4.2 to v3.6 (x86) due to
performance problems with Arkeia Network Backup and AIT-4 tape drives.
The backup database is stored on a v4.2 created ext3 partition. When
accessing this partition after the downgrade, Centos complains on boot
that
fsck.ext3: Filesystem has unsupported feature(s) (/dev/sda5)

question about backup regimens
I need to recommend some backup options for a web server running
CentOS 4.1. The client prefers using a tape drive as their backup
device and has access to safe offsite storage. I was thinking of
system backups weekly and differential backups nightly but don't know
what software to recommend for the differential b/u's. For full
backups I can just schedule a tar and compress using

question for file attributes (atime, ctime)
Hi,
I looked though documentation and also checked last 9 months of
archives, but could not find the corresponding information. We are
having an issue with incremental backup with arkeia. Arkeia checks if
ctime/mtime of the file are changed, if so, it backs up.
I realized that when I ran rsync from a cammnd line, it changed ctime,
and preserved atime of the file in a destination as follows even though
a file has no change in its content. Is this a expected action for rsync...

File names and e-acute char
...amba 1.9.15p8 under IRIX 6.1 (yes I know, it's old stuff ...)
The susers on Windows 9x/WindowsNT just put their strange file name or
directory name (like /usr/people/mesure_?t? ) on the IRIX. However, from
the IRIX side, it's impossible toaccess to such files/directory.
What's more, my ARkeia backup client stalls on such a name and fouled up
my backup database...
NB: Oops: for those that can't read the lines over there

I suppose WindowsX users use a symbol set different from the IRIX one.

Backup options.
I am a long time FreeBSD user and have been using dump/restore for many
years for disk to disk backups.
Now I am getting more and more into FC4 and CentOS, but am I stuck on only
using tar/star for backups?
Tar in its various forms are fine for some items, like home directories, but
dump and restore in FreeBSD also gave me the possibility of easily doing a
bare metal restore.

this bug.
I have done successfull an ext3 filesystem check but this error occours
then againa few hour's / day's later affecting a different file...
(Sorry i cant tell if the fsck cleaned the file correctly, because i
deleted the affected file and used a backup. Unfortunately now the arkeia
restore database is affected and i have to rebuild it from the tapes,
which takes some hours to complete...)
At time of my first posting to this group's somebody told this is a known
bug and is fixed since 2.4.18.
I have upgraded from 2.4.17 to 2.4.18 to 2.4.19 and this bug affected from...

Backup Tape
I am at my final stages of switching my file server from my ageing Novell Netware 5.0 to Linux Suse SLE9. All my workstations are WinXP and Win2000 so I am relying on samba for file sharing. My last stage to resolve is having a backup strategy for the server. I already have a SCSI HP Dat drive I can install in the server but need some easy to use software to back my files. It would need to be able

Backup Solutions based on Linux
I'm having particular issues running Veritas in my Windows environment. The
agent just seems to baulk on some servers. I've looked into backup solutions
running on Linux before but there doesn't seem to be much. Is anyone
familiar with something that has Windows agents and yet managed by Linux?

Re: How to share the tape drive in samba server
...emote tape shares. It's a concept not worth
pursuing because of shortcomings already elucidated
by preposters, but also counterproductive in terms of
low speed yield and potentially contentious chaos.

When I checked the transferred files permissions inside the destination home

4 drwx------ 4 nobody nobody 4096 Aug 27 2001 arkeia

so this problem looks like a permissions/ownerships issue of some kind.
According to the rsync documentation, the -a switch contains:

Looking for server recommendations
We're going to replace an older Solaris7/Netbackup/TapeRobot server with
a new Centos box using backup-to-disk-to-tape (probably using Arkeia).
The specs are up in the air, but generally:
- CentOS/RHEL friendly (3Ware SATA? SCSI?)
- 2U/3U/4U-ish form factor
- hotswap RAID5
- dual PS, hotswap a plus
- USB2.0 port(s) (*)
To give you an idea of where I'm starting to look, take a gander at this

things clear a bit.
Sorry but things clear a bit now ;-)
i ran out of inodes on the filesystem, which is used by the arkeia
database.
It would be nice if the kernel loggs this condition a bit more clearly ;-)
So i guess this time this "bug" is not the same seen corrupting files a
few month before.

Backup problems resolved!
Guys,
I've been searching for a Windows based backup solution for the SAMBA
shares on my Linux server (a Cobalt Qube) since last November, trying
both Seagate Backup Exec and ARCserve but with no success. I've been
monitoring this list and tried most of the suggestions, but nothing came
close.
I'm pleased to say that I've found a solution that works for me ... Dantz

backup posix-acl shares
good day...
well just need some good input on how to backup a
samba server, and to preserve the posix-acl's..
got 1 pdc and 1 bdc running, but it seems that there isn't a good way
to make a backup with acl..
nfs4 doesn't have anny good support for acl's (yet)
so i tried to mount a samba share with mount -t smbfs..
no acl's there ??
so please is there a protocol/service that i

Tape Drives
Is it possible to share a tape drive using Samba. I have a tape drive that is attached to a Solaris box, that I would like to use to backup my entire environment; Solaris and Windows. If this is possible, how should I configure the smb.conf file.
Thanks
