Aloha all, I know too little about what I'm about to write and hope I'm not wasting your time. For a class I'm teaching in archaeological data analysis, I'm trying to put together a routine that calculates the so-called Petersen index and, especially, confidence intervals for the index. This was introduced to archaeologists by N.R.J. Fieller and A. Turner in an article in Journal of Archaeological Science (1982) call...

adding a new dataset to the default R distribution
Hi, I am a student in archaeology with some interest in statistics and R. Recently I've obtained the permission to distribute in the public domain a small dataset (named "spearheads" with 40 obs. of 14 variables) that was used in an introductory statistics book for archaeologists (published in 1994). I've rewr...

R] adding a new dataset to the default R distribution
...As I see it, the first recourse should be use of archives that individual communities may establish. Instructions on how to input the data into R would be a useful small item of ancillary information. Links to such archives (under Data Archives, maybe) might be included on CRAN. The Open Archaeology project would seem a good umbrella for the archiving of archaeology data. Where there is no available repository, or there are reasons for putting the data into an R package, one possibility is to advertise on this list: "Orphan dataset, looking for a good home". In this case I...

Problems with Delphi 3 on SAMBA
Hi, We have a Sun running SAMBA and have a problem with a share which contains Delphi 3 source code. Compilations on large projects fail, with the .EXE file stopping generation at ~2Mb, although compilations of the same code on an NT drive are fine. Delphi 1 seems to work fine on the SAMBA drive, creating files of >3.5Mb, so it does not seem to be a file size problem either. Can anyone shed

test request: SCO with setluid() (i686-pc-sco3.2v5.0.7, possibly others)
...changes did not (I hope!) change the semantics, but there's one change I'd like to make that doesn't fit into the new scheme: the code that calls setluid. The code in question dates back to at least 2001 and I suspect its current location is mere historical accident. Based on some cvs archaeology and looking at the survey[2] data, I believe this only affects SCO platforms, possibly limited to *-pc-sco3.2v*. If anyone is still in possesion of such a beast, could you please try the patch below (against today's snapshot or newer) and see if it still behaves as expected? Thanks. [1] htt...

ActiveRecord bug? ActiveRecord::ConnectionAdapters::Column.type_cast for float columns
...ting for float columns simply does value.to_f, whereas all the others have a rescue or call out to a method, the default implementations of which have rescues or enough logic in that I don''t think they''d fail. Imagine the following: create_table :vehicle do |t| Now, doing some archaeology on trac, I''ve found that the rescue for integer columns was added way back in changeset 928 [3] based on ticket 820 [4]. Putting a rescue block on the type cast would be nice and consistent, and simple, so I can create a patch for this easily. However, I haven''t created a patch...

"shifted" bar chart / battleship curve
...rizontal bar chart matrix for a set of data that have a common set of variables (e.g., % of As, % of Bs, etc.) listed on the Y-axis and groups (e.g., Classes) on the X-axis. The key here is that the bars for each individual class plot are "centered" rather than left or right-justified. In archaeology plots similar to this are called battleship curves or Ford Diagrams, but the suggestions I've received involved manual centering of the bars in Adobe Illustrator. Any suggestions for automating this process are much appreciated. An example of what this might look like can be seen here: http://...

Source code of early S versions
...able to locate any version of S online. Does anyone have a copy, somewhere, rusting away on an old hard disk or slowly flaking off a tape? I've had a rummage round the CMU Statlib on archive.org but no sign of it, and its hard to search for "S" generally. Obviously this would be for archaeological purposes, but there's bound to be someone out there who'd like to try and compile it on a modern system. It might at least be nice to see it in a nice format on Gitlab, for example. But maybe there's licensing problems. Anyone interested in the history of S should read Richard Bec...
