As for using R on Solaris, its easy to compile, looks and acts almost
exactly like S-Plus 3.X. I use R on Sparc Solaris every day.

Compiling R for Solaris 8/Intel CPU
Has anyone successfully compiled R on an intel machine running Sun OS?
I have heard it can't be done, I know S+ hasn't.
