Morans I for Spatial Surveillance
Hello,
I am interested in using Morans I for different time intervals to detect disease clusters.
Ultimately I would like to use CUSUM - or similar monitoring statistic to monitor the results of Morans I - similar to the work by
Rogerson (2005) Spatial Surveillance and Cummulative Sum Methods in Spatial and Syndromic Surveillance for Public Health.
Thus far - thanks to the list I have

Controller testing and mocks...
...ails (without additional
plugins) might be a mistake.
Using a tool like Test::Rails from the ZenTest gem would seem to push
even stronger towards the mock''d approach as the view and controller
tests are seperated and thus more easily recongnizeable as unit tests.
How have other people apprached this issue? Do you mock with abandon in
the controller tests, or only when absolutely required, or have you
found some sweet-spot between the two extremes that you can share?

I familarized myelf with kalmanlike and structts which are approaches
for building and estimating ( and forecasting ) state space models ( or
the equivalent arima models ).
back in 2003, gavin simpson wrote an email describing the west and
harrison apprach to estimate state space models and asked if anything
was out there for
using that approach. the goals of this approach are the same as kalman

"Heuristic optimisation"?
I wondered was people on this list felt about this article:
http://www.voxeu.org/index.php?q=node/2363
which talks about the problems of obtaining sound answers in numerical
optimisation in settings such as MLE or NLS.

absurd computiation times of lme
Hi,
i've been trying to apply the lme apprach to growth curves
of children, but lme keeps running for ever and ever as
soon as I use a reasonable basis.
First Example:
Data are 39 boys from the Berkeley growth study, each one
measured 31 times at the ages of
1.00 1.25 1.50 1.75 2.00 3.00 4.00 5.00 6.00 7.00 8.00 8.50
9.00 9.50 10.00 10.50 11.00 11.50 12.00 12.50 13.00 13.50

Determining the syslog provider
Hi,
I''m trying to make all my servers send their logs to a central server.
Which seems quite simple, at first.
My problem is that my servers are on different versions of different
operating systems.
And each of them has a different syslog default provider (syslog, rsyslog,
syslog-ng...).
Which of course might have been replaced by an admin who prefered another...
