but...
I hate the idea of running a channel bank. It just seems unecessary,
and more crap to break, set up, and buy.
DIalogic 4 and 12 port cards are expensive. The 12 port prohibitively
so, so I think I would be better off getting 2 of the 4 port cards. I
have found them for <900$ apiece on ebay.
That compairs as:
Case 1 Channel bank
Asterisk box: 500$ (provably less than this, as it is a minimal machine)
T100P card: 500$
Channel Bank 600$ (actually, from what I can find, provably more like
1000$ before I am done)
Phones: I am going to go with the Mitel Networks 5055, they...

cores-per-socket
...of cores, we needed to use a virtualization
technology that converts multiple cores into a single socket. (This
proprietary software will allow us to use up to 4 cores per physical socket,
so that''s what we want to map. We intend to buy a Dell server that has 4
physical CPUs with 12 cores apiece, for a total of 48 cores; we''re hoping
that XenServer will allow us to map this to instead 8 CPUs of 4 cores
apiece. From what I understand, xcp supports this using the
"cores-per-socket" parameter, right?
However, for this guest OS, we need **Linux** on the guest OS, NOT Windo...

Use DECT GAP handsets with Snom M3 base?
...retty much the response I expected.
This would be SOHO/home use. We're using the 'ATA + multi-handset
cordless phone' approach right now, but there are definitely advantages
to having Asterisk see each handset as an extension.
Looks like the Snom handsets are running at least US$130 apiece, so it'd
be an expensive proposition to replace all our handsets. By comparison,
a mainstream Panasonic DECT 6.0 handset runs ~US$30 (and I already have
six...). I'm thinking a couple of 'nice' M3 handsets, and low-cost ones
for the rest of the house. It's not a big deal i...

fxo cards
Hi all,
Is there any alternative hardware components for multi port FXO cards, other
than Single and E1 or T1 level? For example 4 or 8 port FXO card is ideal.
Also the price matters.
Thanks!

dovecot Digest, Vol 89, Issue 25
...GFS2 and
some people are insisting on 32k+ files in one folder with the odd few
trying 65k or more (I'm surprised their clients don't break).
For info sake: we have Dovecot running on a pair of dedicated dual E5530
(quad-core X86 1300MHZ FSB cpu) servers (RH cluster+GFS2) with 24Gb RAM
apiece and ~2TB of 8Gb/s san-attached storage available.
There are only ~250 accounts but there's around 600Gb in the maildir
folder areas and another 300Gb in a separate dedicated inbox area - and
I believe there's another 1TB of stuff in client local folders we're
trying to pull back to...

[OFFTOPIC] Need small PC
...ux 2.4 without fuss.
It would be NICE if:
f) The machines can be run in a no-moving-parts configuration, e.g.
using a CompactFlash card instead of a hard disk;
g) These machines are available for retail, as opposed to mail order, in
the San Francisco Bay Area;
h) They were to cost less than $1000 apiece in quantity 10 or so.
I would appreciate suitable pointers.

[PATCH] Out-of-band challenge (OBC) authentication method
This patch (https://bugzilla.mindrot.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1438) creates a
kbdint device that provides a server-based authentication mechanism. The
server generates and emails you a random string when you attempt to
login. You're authenticated if you can correctly answer the challenge.
You can use a regular email account, a pager, cell phone or other email
capable device to receive the

create objects in a loop and adding sqlQuery content to them
Hi there,
I've got a database or rather spreadsheet with several columns and rows.
For one column named sites I want to loop through all possible values
and retrieve
all data out of the database where site = x and write it into an
object named 'sitex_data'.
Somehow I'm really missing something as I'm not able to create these
sitex_data objects with
the database values,

Reducing echo on FXS port
Hello everybody,
I am sorry to bring this up again if this kind of echo issue has ever discussed.
Phone2 in below call path experiences quite annoying echo:
Phone1 --> FXS (TDM400P) --> Asterisk --> SIP GW --> PSTN --> Phone2
It is annoying as on phone2, we can hear the whole words we say with the level of maybe 25% of the original sound. I can reduce the echo to maximum with

Multiple apps on the same server, all should be able to survive slashdotting
Dear all,
I am researching solutions for "how do you squeeze as many Rails apps as you
can on a cluster" problem.
Environment constraints are as follows:
* 4 commodity web servers (2 CPUs, 8 Gb of RAM each)
* shared file storage and database (big, fast, not a bottleneck)
* multiple Rails apps running on it
* normally, the load is insignificant, but from time to time any of these

[nbdkit PATCH v2 4/5] python: Expose FUA support
...are added),
but in so doing, there is no way to probe whether a C plugin
supports FUA flags, so the C .can_fua has to return a tri-state.
But for python plugins, thanks to the fact that python functions
have named and optional parameters, it's a lot cleaner to
provide new flags as a bool option apiece, instead of requiring
the python program to parse out bits from an int, and easy to
introspect if FUA support is present, so can_fua only has to
return a bool on whether to advertise FUA support to the
client.
One other thing that makes for some interesting C glue code:
if at least one of the thr...

Opinions on Cisco 7960G, Polycom IP-600, and Snom 360
Hello,
We are planning to replace our current PBX with an Asterisk / SIP
solution, and are now trying to decide which phones to get. My first
thought was the Cisco 7960G, but the Cisco licensing scheme irritates me
enough that I'll probably end up going with either the Polycom IP-600 or
Snom 360.
If anyone has any opinions of these phones, especially in comparison to
each other, I would

ZFS memory and swap usage
Greetings, all.
Does anyone have a good whitepaper or three on how ZFS uses memory and swap? I did some Googling, but found nothing that was useful.
The reason I ask is that we have a small issue with some of our DBA''s. We have a server with 16GB of memory, and they are looking at moving over databases to it from a smaller system. The catch is that they are moving to 10g. Oracle

Future RSYNC enhancement/improvement suggestions

and also got the ideas about their possible solutions
- please could you investigate & consider implementing the features,
described below, to future RSYNC releases ?

compression at zfs filesystem creation
Hi,
I just installed 2009.06 and found that compression isn''t enabled by default when filesystems are created. Does is make sense to have an RFE open for this? (I''ll open one tonight if need be.) We keep telling people to turn on compression. Are there any situations where turning on compression doesn''t make sense, like rpool/swap? what about rpool/dump?
Thanks,

Cheap ZFS homeserver.
So after toying around with some stuff a few months back I got bogged down and set this project aside for a while. Time to revisit. <BR><BR>
Looking around there still is not a good "these cards/motherboards" work list. the HCL is hardly ever updated, and its far more geared towards business use than hobbyist/home use. So bearing all of that in mind I will need the
