Apache 1.3 + remote FastCGI balancing

As I have a lot of stability problems with Lighttpd + FastCGI-Cluster I
wanted to test Apache 1.3 as most of the "big" sites like 43people or
BaseCamp run on it.
Every example I find only talks about lokal FastCGI processes and not
about remote ones and explains how the requests are balanced.
Are there any good examples out there and can Apache1.3/mod_fastcgi load
balance

Run fastcgi in Apache 1.3, or proxy through lighttpd?
I''m working with a guy who has Apache 1.3 installed on his server, and
it''s not an option to simply use lighttpd for a Rails application I''m
helping him with. I''ve seen that Apache 2 apparently is crappy when
it comes to fastcgi, but 1.3 isn''t so bad. I can then either just run
my app straight in Apache, or I could proxy it through to lighttpd.

Hosting on VPS
I have a VPS account with 256MB guaranteed RAM.
I am running it as Apache1.3 -> Pen -> mongrel_cluster (with 2 mongrel
servers).
"top" shows 2 "ruby" instances (I guess for both of the mongrel
servers), each weighing in at about 25MB. Does that sound about right?
If you are using 2 mongrel servers per client app, does that mean that
each RoR app needs 50MB+

Hello,
I''ve been going though the "4 Days on Rails" tutorial at
http://rails.homelinux.org/ test-driving ruby on rails using the WEBrick
server without problems. I''m trying to move the app to be seen by
apache2, and am having some troubles. I''ve looked through many guides
online which all say pretty much the same thing, which, I think, I am
doing.

apache 1 fastcgi config correct???
I followed this tutorial on the rails wiki about how to get apache with
fastcgi working on a vps machine:

Apache2+fcgid = "malformed header from script" when page starts with a space
I was getting some "application failed to start properly" pages, but
production.log was not showing anything.
Looking closer I''ve noticed that server_error.log (the apache log) was
giving lines like:
"malformed header from script. Bad header=<html>: dispatch.fcgi, referer:"

Ajax.Updater doesn't work with IE6 properly
My environment is Apache2+php5. The test doc is "ajaxtest.php", which
uses Ajax.Updater to load content from /test/test1/inphp.php. It works
soomthly in Firefox. But nothing can be displayed in IE6, the brower
got no response and the onComplete was not trigered. However, if I put
the two doc under the same dir, everything goes well. Or, if I replace
the inphp.php with a html doc such as

Errno::ENXIO (Device not configured) when using net/https from rails

Reload an application without restarting the Server?
Hi, I would like to set up a "shared hosting"-like rails environment on
a linux (+Apache1.3 +FastCGI +MySQL) machine. As we all know, rails
provides support for different environments.
