Microsoft Antitrust Remedy proposal, take 3
I've learned a fair bit since putting together my
essay on the States' proposed remedies. In particular,
Microsoft's response to the States was enlightening;
it pointed out the parts of the Court of Appeals ruling
that need to be heeded when fashioning a remedy.
I now feel that the States' proposal has little chance of
being accepted by the judge. The Proposed Final Judgment

Quick clipping from the case:
According to SCO, the GPL (and thus also the LGPL) "is unenforceable,

inapplicable in this litigation (Ex. 2 ?? 24, 28, 155, 157); and is
preempted by federal copyright law and unenforceable under state law.

Heineken Face EU Fines for Curbing Rivalry
Heineken NV and Carlsberg A/S may be fined after the European Commission charged that they conspired to curb competition in the Dutch and Danish beer markets from 1993 to 1996.
The European Union's antitrust regulator said evidence collected in raids two years ago showed the two brewers broke EU law by agreeing not to sell ``intensively'' in each other's territory. The companies denied the allegations.
Competition Commissioner Mario Monti is cracking down on price fixing in industries fro...

Open Letter to DOJ re Microsoft Settlement
The proposed settlement in the Microsoft antitrust trial will probably
be accepted by the judge unless a lot of people complain soon, even
though it lacks any useful enforcement provisions and fails to prohibit
many of Microsoft's anticompetitive practices.
I've drafted an open letter to the Department of Justice to explain why

Steve Jobs about theora
I guess you've all read it already, but here it goes:
"All video codecs are covered by patents. A patent pool is being
assembled to go after Theora and other ?open source? codecs now.
Unfortunately, just because something is open source, it doesn?t mean
or guarantee that it doesn?t infringe on others patents. An open
standard is different from being royalty free or open source.

Re: ogg vorbis
Sure.
However, I don't believe e-mail is an effective tool to make change, since
much of the stuff that gets sent about things like this, either look like
fanatics that won't take no for an answer, or people that demand their
right to something which a company can't guarantee or has no obligation to
provide. Most of the time, e-mail ends up sounding like a flame fest which
isn't

Nash equilibrium and other game theory tools implemented in networks using igraph or similar
Hello Chris,
I was implying you are capable enough to implement it, while you have
already identify a research paper. If there is no package out there,
uploading to CRAN would help future user too. I am more than happy to
help if you want to implement from scratch.
Best,
Mehmet

HELP: need better understanding of "--delete" flag
Need to understand exactly what the "--delete" flag
does when rsync runs.
Here is my understanding... If a file is created on
the source machine on monday, then rsync'd to the
rsync server on monday night, then deleted on the
source machine tuesday, then it will be deleted from
the rsync server on tuesday night when the cron job
runs again.
But, would rsync under any circumstances,

most pointless mentioning/advertising of a format in a film i've ever seen
In the recent muppets christmas film, god (played by whoopi goldberg- or howevr u spell her name), mentioned converting her entire album collection (every album ever recorded. ever) to mp3 files.
Now that is the most pointless use of advertising the inferior mp3 format i've ever seen.
Now that we've started covering the use of vorbis in games, anyone spotted any reference (no matter how

Nash equilibrium and other game theory tools implemented in networks using igraph or similar
Does anyone know of some code, and examples that implement game theory/Nash
equilibrium hypothesis testing using existing packages like igraph/statnet
or similar?
Perhaps along the lines of this article:

Equilibrium in Social Networks, *4*, 6224.

Monopolies are inherently inefficient and plodding. Government is special only because it is the biggest monopoly.
(That?s why we have antitrust law: not because it?s good for the consumer, but because it fights the trend toward zaibatsu rule.)
Few organizations are working under such stringent constraints, if only because it?s a danger to the health of the organization. Only monopolies can get away with it.

Hi,
I just subscribed to the theora-lists. I'm from the XVID project,
so I know a deal about video and MPEG-4 in particular, but nothing about
Vorbis/Theora etc., That's why I'm here, because I'm interested in
patent-free alternatives.
I guess there is no documentation of the current status
