PATA Hard Drive woes
Hi All.
Yesterday I was installing Centos 5.5 to my web server, and
it looks like the main hard drive has gone AWOL.
Fedora 12 put the file system into r/o mode.
The drive is an Hitachi, still under warranty.
There are bad sectors on it, and running the Hitachi DFT
tool confirms this. Also I cannot repair the bad sectors.
Would this be caused by a faulty I/O chip, or is it safe to

CentOS-4.3 Install Fails
I'm using the same CD's that I've used to install CentOS on my other
systems.
After the first failure I had the installation verify the install media just
in case. It passed.
I've tried the default install (used for all previous installs) and the i586
option (after googling). They both fail in the same way.
Here is a transcript of what is output to the screen:

Asterisk Compatible Server Architecture
Hi,
I'm planning on moving my Asterisk server to a rackmount. I've read
that Asterisk has run into some problems with certain hardware
configurations so I thought I'd vet my proposed architecture with the
board. Note that I'll be running Asterisk 1.2 on Re Hat 9.0 and I
need to support a TDM400 card.
Many thanks for your comments.

how to manage Digium TDM04B outgoing calls correctly
I'm installing my first Asterisk server. I have a TDM04B card installed
in my asterisk server (4x FXO ports). I have 5 Cisco IP phone 7960
working fine on asterisk using SIP. My configuration to receive call is
working as expected meaning anyone calling on one of the 4 FXO ports is
answer by asterisk and asked to enter the extension of the person to
reach and then it is transfer on the

voicemail without prompt
I'm trying to find a way to call voicemail without being prompted for my mailbox number. I was wondering if there was a variable for sip mailbox, or is there a way to define a variable that matches a sip's mailbox.
I tried using "exten => 996,1,voicemailMain(${CALLERIDNUM})" but this only works if the mailbox matches the caller id.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Tyan Thunder K8SE S2892 Report
I had my eye on the Tyan dual-Opteron mobos for awhile. I tried to find
a posting *anywhere* sharing experiences with these boards under Linux.
No such luck. So placing myself under the heading "Where Angles Fear to
Tread," I went ahead and built a system anyway. Here's what I've learned.
The specs:

Re: Recommendations for a “real RAID" 1 card on Centos box
This is getting OT and you are going to end up spending more on redundancy then if you just called Dell and ordered another computer.

Athlon 64 for Asterisk?
I want to buy a new server to run Asterisk and after looking at prices
for the Athlon XP 3000+ it costs the same as an Athlon 64 at the same speed
rating. I was wondering if Zaptel/Asterisk will compile/work on an Athlon 64?

Cheap ZFS homeserver.
So after toying around with some stuff a few months back I got bogged down and set this project aside for a while. Time to revisit.

Looking around there still is not a good "these cards/motherboards" work list. the HCL is hardly ever updated, and its far more geared towards business use than hobbyist/home use. So bearing all of that in mind I will need the

SAS raid controllers
Is anyone running either the newish Adaptec 5805 or the new LSI (3ware) 9750
sas raid controllers in a production environment with Centos 5.3/5.4?
The low price of these cards makes me suspicious, compared to the more
expensive pre-merger 3ware cards and considerably more expensive Areca
ARC-1680. I've been 'burned' by the low cost of Promise raid cards (just as

ZFS Hardware Check, OS X Compatibility, NEWBIE!!
This is my first post here, and i hope it is ok that i posted in this thread.
I have been doing a bit of reading on the solaris platforms, and seem to be inclined to try out the open solaris os or solaris 10. My only worry is that my lack of knowledge with the command line may make this difficult regarding trouble shooting. It seems fairly straighforward creating zpools etc, but maybe nexenta is

storage servers crashing, hair being pulled out!
I have a trio of servers that like to reboot during high disk /
network IO operations. They don't appear to panic, as I have
kernel.panic = 0 in sysctl.conf. The syslog just shows normal
messages, like samba complaining about browse master and then just
syslogd starting up.
The machines seem to crash when I'm not near the console, usually when
I'm trying to pull data off them to

centos 5 installs fine, I was running fine then the machine just turned off.
I tried to run a video for the last 8 hours on it waiting to happen
again and it
worked just fine.
I then did a continues compile with a batch file and after a few minutes it
just turned off... I saw

ultra-cheap asterisk box -> sorta OT, more a bout Dell
FWIW:
I order a lot of Dells. My boss is cheap. That being said, I *like* Dell,
it's a very well designed box. It's been said many times that Dell does not
innovate, instead they copy and improve and I firmly agree with the
"improve" part - they are a dream to work on.
Some things to watch out for with Dell:
1. They typically tack on a shipping charge of $139 Cdn (yes they

Centos-compatible motherboards
Hi all!
I'm toying with the idea of spending some Christmas money on a new MB and
CPU to upgrade my desktop.
Although I've always been partial to AMD chips, I'm tempted this time to
find something Intel-ish, I5, quad core, or so.
In looking at mommyboards at New Egg and Amazon, I find so many I am
unable to make reasonable determinations regarding suitability, so am
hoping some of
