Problem in encoding/decoding speech in Win CE
...decodes to 80kb (as expected). While I can reproduce tapping sounds (by banging a pen on a desk), I am unable to reproduce voice - in which case I hear some junk. Also, the tapping sounds are quite faint. Am I doing something wrong, or is there a problem with the Win CE libraries ? Thanks, Anindya.

yum update / kernal update failed - remove or repair
...M update? > ... If you do not want to involve the ISP ever again when a kernel won't boot, you can configure a fallback kernel [0].? I've used something similar a very long time ago when the main boot loader was LILO - it was much easier to do this kind of thing with it. yum update / kernal update failed - remove or repair
I have a VPS running C7. I ran a 'yum update' which included a kernel update. The yum update wasn't a total success because mariadb updates failed. However everything else appeared to work. However, when I rebooted the server it did not restart. I have managed to get the ISP's support desk to boot the server by selecting the previous kernel, and I now have access to my box again.

improving/speeding up a very large, slow simulation
Dear R help; I'll preface this by saying that the example I've provided below is pretty long, turgid, and otherwise a deep dive into a series of functions I wrote for a simulation study. It is, however, reproducible and self-contained. I'm trying to do my first simulation study that's quite big, and so I'll say that the output of this simulation as I'd like it to be is
