winbindd running amok
...e ldap backend to speedup by factor 20-200 and
slapd now doesn't seem to be the bottleneck anymore.
Don't know how well the windows authentication now works, since this is
presently done by the heartbeat failover server.
However, simply starting 'mc' as root makes winbindd running amok and I have
no idea what actually happens.
I know this is ancient version 3.0.22, but upgrading without knowing
regressions is not so easy and so far we have no idea how to properly test
it first.
Below are 'strace -f mc' logs and winbindd logs. The ldap database has
about 50000 entries....

Manual OOM killing?
Hey guys and gals,
Yesterday I had one of my scientists kill one of my servers when his
program ran amok and gobbled up all the memory, or forked too many
processes, or I'm just not exactly sure what to be honest.
Is there something I can run manually in cron to look for rampant
programs and kill them? I know that may be hard to discern but I
could also include a list if "known good"...

my previous yum.repos.d entries have been trashed, with the only ones
left is base, CentOS Media then the mirrors.rpmforge.reo,
rhel-mondo.repo, rpmforge.repo, and webmin.repo.
I've been bitten by the mixing of repositories before and want to avoid
that scenario. Something is amok in the existing, and it throws all
kinds of errors about something not found or such, so I'm asking some
kind soul of they would share their working repo file structure for me?
I *think* I have protect base, and priorities installed already, but

passwd problem with new vps
...am_get_authtok_verify returned error: Failed preliminary check by password service
but I have no clue what the check I've failed is, or if it's a console
problem (locales, weird control characters) or maybe a selinux thing?
For the record, if I enter a weak password on purpose, e.g. "amok",
everything works, meaning that I get an explanation like "password
refused because it's too short", or something like that. But when I
try longer passwords, with or without non alphanumeric characters, I
get this error.
what else should I check, or fix?
TIA,
Marco

Clients periodically disconnecting
Samba 3.0.21c, RHEL4.
About a week ago, we restarted our Samba server because nmbd had run
amok. Since that restart, our Apple clients have periodically
disconnected -- by most reports, they disconnect every 15-45 minutes.
It doesn't appear to be synchronized, i.e., every Mac on campus
doesn't disconnect at once, but only occasionally. They get a message
similar to:

...been working quite nicely so far, until I tried removing some
old items from the index (removing items when the index was smaller was
no problems at all).
When I try to remove them now (using writabledatabase_delete_document()
via php), it halfway freezes up the machine, and the apache httpd runs
amok spawning more and more children, until I break the php script that
is trying to remove documents from xapian.

assessment?

lots of other fluff, numerous problems of other nature have started
cropping up. Anyone have any suggestions as to what to do besides make
a boat anchor out of it? It's all greek to me, so I'm totally at the
mercy of those folks who understand the bits and bites (lit) that have
run amok in things. Any suggestions as a possible fault other than the
cpu just becoming more toasty brown? :)
Thanks...

syslogd/klogd problem on CentOS4.3
Hi all,
I have installed a CentOS4.3 box and migrated some application from
FC1 to the new box, everything else runs perfectly except
syslogd/klogd.
/etc/rc.d/init.d/syslog starts without any problem, but there is
nothing logged into /var/log/messages, even I restart the service.
However, I tried to shut the service down and run "syslogd -m 0 &" and
"klogd -x &" as

Perceived problem... fixed
...sabling more
and more of my app, the problem could be traced back to ....
yes, RMagick anyway. Turned out someone had left a source install on
the server. i.e. not the gem. Ruby was able to find it and let it (as
we all know: the cleanest image manipulation api on the planet)
(sarcasm) run amok. Removing the source RMagick instantly fixed all
problems.
Memory leaks you ask? Yes! Yes! Yes!
Apparently people have been able to get RMagick running fine on a
busy site, but I am not one of them.
Happily running a Mongrel trio again (behind LiteSpeed).

Bug#390678: pygrub import path is incorrect
Package: xen-utils-3.0.2-1
Version: 3.0.2-3+hg9762-1

But grub.GrubConf, for example, is
at /usr/lib/xen-3.0.2-1/lib/python/grub/GrubConf.py.
Fix: change the added sys.path entry to point
to /usr/lib/xen-3.0.2-1/lib/python.

Odd behaviour with modules; looking for some theories
...iles being deleted completely, it's like they were
regenerated incorrectly. Checking backups showed these files were last
changed (to their short form) on Feb 11; yum.log doesn't show any sign
of updates on that date, so presumably it wasn't something like a kernel
installation running amok.
Does anyone have any theories as to what happened? Random logical
guesses is fine ;-)

WINE Corrupting directory names on windows partition
Hi all,
I've been running WINE on my Linux-Mandrake 7.2 box. I have a FAT32 windows 98
partition that I've directed WINE to use in wine.conf. I've been noticing that
after running programs under wine, some of the directories on the windows
partition will have been renamed to names like "$!$!$!$!.dsk" or "$!$!$!
$!.prg". Needless to say, this interferes with

Massive number of processes bringing system to a halt.
Dear All,
I'm running SAMBA 2.0.5a on a Sun 450 running Solaris 7. In the past I've had an occasional
problem with processes running amok and causing the server to grind to a halt, which I've put
down to network glitches as they seemed to coincide with problems on the network. But today
I've had 3 instances where the number of smbd processes has just steadily increased until
nothing at all can run and even the system conso...

p2p-application ran amok. i''ve killed the process but
/proc/net/ip_conntrack still got more than 7000 (now stale) entries of 8184

wonder if i can flush this table manually. the entries in there look like

Bug#691734: xen-utils-common should install successfully even if xen cannot be started
Package: xen-utils-common
Version: 4.1.3-2
Severity: important
IMPORTANT NOTE:
This bug has been generated using reportbug run from a debian stable system. The affected debian testing systems are isolated in a lab and do not have internet access. The issue is wholly reproducible on several different debian testing installations.
xen-utils-common fails to install if xen cannot be started.
