Ambisonia proposal

Our proposal involves only Vorbis. Uncompressed PCM Ambisonics is already well catered for.

(Universal) Ambisonic implementation
Hi Flac Developers,
My name is Etienne Deleflie, I'm the founder of
http://www.ambisonia.com and, more recently, http://soundofspace.com.
Myself and the community I serve are looking for a lossless file
format that can encapsulate ambisonic encoding. To this end a
specification has been drafted, and is nearing stability, that
describes practical features designed to get the most out...

Ambisonics Proposal summary.
Hi all,
My apologies for the confusion ... but I am re-naming this thread
again because the proposal doesn't come from Ambisonia. As the founder
of Ambisonia I have only been 'mediating' between some members of the
ambisonic community ... so it would be wrong to associate the spec
with Ambisonia.
To clarify. This is what the spec proposes:
- that Mapping = 1 means the contents are ambisonic
- that the Vorbis encode...

an ID for a METADATA_BLOCK_APPLICATION.
If you are interested in the ".amb" spec then the
non-standard GUIDs are described at:
http://dream.cs.bath.ac.uk/researchdev/wave-ex/bformat.html
and the rest of the description is at:
http://www.ambisonia.com/Members/mleese/file-format-for-b-format/
There are currently over 100 pieces in the
".amb" format available for free download.
Most are full-sphere surround sound. Visit

--keep-foreign-metadata question
Not sure if this belongs here or in flac-dev.
I am subscribed to both, so flop it over if fits
better over there.
Looking at the Changelog for FLAC 1.2.1
(17-Sep-2007), it says:
"With the new --keep-foreign-metadata in
flac, non-audio RIFF and AIFF chunks can
be stored in FLAC files and recreated when
decoding."
Where can I find more detail on what is a

Ambisonic Systems
...ambisonics? Something to sanity check/inform equipment selections of someone building My First Ambisonics Rig?
Not at all Monty. This is an important question and I am ashamed to say I can't point you to a good answer.
In the meantime, have a look at
Permananent Ambisonic Systems from
www.ambisonia.com\Members\ricardo
Using identical speakers gives much better results, though matched phase is sufficient.

This isn't true and would invalidate about 70% of good small speakers.
My choice would be The Core on the above page. If...

I was a little surprised that you did not discuss
the ".amb" format as this is the official file
format for Ambisonic B-Format.(3) This has
also been used in the wild for many years,
particularly at Ambisonia.com.(4) It uses
Furse-Malham component ordering and MaxN
normalization. (It also only works up to
third-order.)
Note that Vorbis is lossy. Ambisonics is picky
about low-frequency phase and, as far as I
know, nobody has checked the extent to which
this is preserved in Vorbis. This may or may

WAVEFORMATEXTENSIBLE_CHANNEL_MASK is not described
...nnels but a channel
mask of zero. Clearly, the channel mask does
not always implicitly contain the number of
channels. Not every FLAC or
WAVEFORMATEXTENSIBLE file will contain
speaker feeds. The FLAC specification needs
to allow for this.
The Microsoft specification can be viewed at:
http://www.ambisonia.com/Members/mleese/file-formats/multichaud.pdf/view
The underlying problem is that FLAC has got
itself into a mess over channel assignments.
The number of channels is specified in the
METADATA_BLOCK_STREAMINFO, but
using only three bits. (Three bits is insufficient
for the channel assignment, e...

Mapping = 1 Ambisonic Vorbis flag
Where can I find the Header file or whatever which specifies the "Mapping" flag.
In feb - apr 2007, there was a lot of discussion about Ambisonics and Monty kindly stated that
Mapping = 1 ; Denotes and Ambisonic file as opposed to = 0 which is 1 speaker/ 1 channel
Has this been written explicitly into the standard?
Which standard should I be looking at?
