SAS vs. R in web application
...raw data to the server and have SAS perform the calculations there. Would this option require a multi-user SAS license? (I know, I should check with SAS Institute, but I thought I'd ask anyway. Someone in the list may have done something similar). Thanks in advance for any suggestions. Carlos Alzola [[alternative HTML version deleted]]

terribly naive question
Dear R-Representative: I am very new to R and I have to admit that I am not the cleverest of users. So, please bear with me. I have installed R on my Mac OS 8.6. I am interested in eventually using the packages -- many useful ones have been downloaded with the basic R software. I have looked through some of the manuals, however, I have not yet found how to access the commands in these packages.

Nicely formatted summary table with mean, standard deviation or number and proportion
Dear all, The incredibly useful Hmisc package provides a method to generate summary tables that can be typeset in latex. The Alzola and Harrell book "An introduction to S and the Hmisc and Design libraries" provides an example that generates mean and quartiles for continuous variables, and numbers and percentages for count variables: summary() with method = 'reverse'. I wonder if there is a way to chang...

what is a good learning book for R?
Aside from An Introduction to R by W. N. Venables, D. M. Smith (the PDF is free), what would people recommend as a good starter book? I was thinking of introductory Statistics with R by Peter Dalgaard. Any thoughts?? My knowledge of Stats is stale and the primary use of R is for time series analysis. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. -- Jonathan jqm475 at gmail.com

Multiple barplots on the same axis
Hi R newbie here :) I need to plot 3 barplots in the same axis, something like | | _ _ _ | | | _ | | _ | | _ | _ | || | _ | || | _ | || | | | || || | | || || | | || || | -+----------------------------------------- | v1 v2 v3 Is there any documentation describing how to achieve that, and

cross-validation / sensitivity anaylsis for logistic regression model
Hi, I have developed a logistic regression model in the form of (factor_1~ numeric + factor_2) and would like to perform a cross-validation or some similar form of sensitivity analysis on this model. using cv.glm() from the boot package: # dataframe from which model was built in 'z' # model is called 'm_geo.lrm' # as suggested in the man page for a binomial model: cost <-

Constrained Regression
Hello everyone, I have 3 variables Y, X1 and X2. Each variables lies between 0 and 1. I want to do a constrained regression such that a>0 and (1-a) >0 for the model: Y = a*X1 + (1-a)*X2 I tried the help on the constrained regression in R but I concede that it was not helpful. Any help is greatly appreciated -- Thanks, Jim. [[alternative HTML version deleted]]

data manipulation docs
Hi All, Is there some document/manual about data manipulation within R that I could use as a reference (obviously, aside the R manuals)? The reason I am asking is that I have a number of data frames/matrices containg genetic data. The data is in a character form, as in: V1 V2 V3 V4 V5 1 AA AG AA GG AG 2 AC AA AA GG AG 3 AA AG AA GG AG 4 AA AA AA GG AG 5 AA AA AA GG AA I need, to chop,

Great R documentation
Dear all, I'm trying to improve the documentation I provide my R packages, and to that end I'd like to find out what you think is great R documentation. I'm particularly interested in function documentation, but great vignettes, websites or book are also of interest. What is your favourite bit of R documentation, and why? Thanks, Hadley

variable labels to accompany data.frame
Often it is useful to keep a "codebook" to document the contents of a dataset. (By "dataset" I mean a rectangular structure such as a dataframe.) The codebook has as many rows as the dataset has columns (variables, fields). The columns (fields) of the codebook may include: ? variable name ? type (character, factor, integer, etc) ? variable label

Plot means with error bars - A novice needs help
Hello, I'd appreciate a suggestion on how to construct plots (barplots?) that use means on the Y axis instead of density/count. I'd also like to use groups and plot error or confidence interval bars on these graphs. I know this is a read the manual situation. I'd appreciate help with what to read, or your benevolence with some sample code. I've looked at lattice and gplots2, but

Comparing R and SAs
Hi: For those of you who are adept at both SAS and R, I have the following questions: a) What are some reasons / tasks for which you would use R over SAS and vice versa? b) What are some things for which R is a must have that SAS cannot fulfill the requirements? I am on the ramp up on both of them. The general feeling that I am getting by following this group is that R updates to the product are

Reading SAS data into R
Dear all, One of my students (whom I am trying to convince to use R) wants to get a fairly large SAS dataset into R (about 150mB). An obvious and simple thing she tried was to write the dataset as a .csv-file and then read that into R, but that takes forever (or something close to that..). The dataset is so large, that exporting it as an Excel file from SAS is not feasible (more than 65000 lines).

R-etiquette
I'm about to present a report (for internal use of governmental agency). I used extensively R , contibuted packages, as well as communications on the R-list As well as citing R, I would like to know how to cite the contributed packages (it is not so easy, as some have been used exensively, other marginally, some are called from another package and some were not used as softwares but gave me

Useful books for learning the R software and the S programming language
any useful books for learning the R statistical software? are they pricey? and if the books recommended focus on S, how compatible will they be for someone learning R? thank you in advance for your help. P.S. specialized survey statistical procedures? Is R good at that? [[alternative HTML version deleted]]
