Once I made sure I retrieved all my data, I followed your suggestion,
and it looks like I'm making big progress. The system booted again,
though it feels a bit sluggish. Here's the current state of things.

Trouble setting up HP Officejet Pro 8600 printer on CentOS 7 + KDE
...machines in my office
(server, desktops, workstation) are running Slackware64 14.1 or 14.2,
and they can all use the printer perfectly.
I installed hplip-gui and ran it. The printer is a network printer, it
has a static IP in the network and can also be addressed by its hostname.
[kikinovak at alphamule:~] $ host hp-officejet
hp-officejet.microlinux.lan has address 192.168.2.252
When I run hp-setup with the default options, the setup program "sees"
the printer, but informs me that there is a "communication problem". I
figure this is because the default seach method is mDNS/B...

kernel-lt from ELRepo vs. GRUB: define default boot kernel
...S 7.5 (1804), I had to upgrade my
kernel from vanilla to kernel-lt from ELRepo. My NVidia GeForce 210
would only work with the driver provided by NVidia, which in turn
required a more recent kernel than 3.0.10. Anyway.
Right now here's all the kernels that I have on my workstation:
[root at alphamule:~] # rpm -qa | grep -i kernel
kernel-lt-devel-4.4.129-1.el7.elrepo.x86_64
kernel-lt-devel-4.4.131-1.el7.elrepo.x86_64
kernel-lt-headers-4.4.131-1.el7.elrepo.x86_64
kernel-lt-4.4.131-1.el7.elrepo.x86_64
kernel-lt-4.4.129-1.el7.elrepo.x86_64
And here's what I'm currently running:...

Unfortunately that didn't work. The boot process stops here:
