Flac woes
There are not bugs in flac, they are bugs in your Alesis HD24. What you are asking for are features to be added to flac to fix the bugs in your Alesis. flac is the wrong place to be addressing errors in your Alesis hardware. A better solution would be a stand-alone program which can patch the errors in your WAV files, possibly asking for your choice...

Flac woes
...mber of bytes. The gotcha here, as I have tried to explain in similar cases before, is that we do not live in a perfect world. Many of us record audio and are unable to control whether a piece of hardware crashes and leaves the end of a WAV perfectly aligned or padded. In this case the recorder (Alesis hd24) did not crash, it apparently just doesn't pad. Since these are original audio masters being backed up, editing them isn't a viable option. The 'other cases' refers to situations where I am unable to use flac on WAV files if the WAV header size is different than the actual fil...

vorbis.arkena.com Ogg stream testing
Thanks for letting us try this. On my 1.5M DSL line in Pasadena CA USA, I get the 128k stream real good, output to Alesis M1 Active monitors. The fidelity is fine, as far as what I think the content probably sounds like. The 64K stream comes in fine as to throughput but sounds quite grainy, smeared and flangy high freqs. Well, you asked for reports. Keep up the good work. --- >8 ---- List archives: http://www...

Gain control
How are people doing gain control, out of curiosity? I know boxes exist (anyone have names and mfrs?) that ride the gain for big radio stations, ensuring that there is no distortion and raising the volume of songs recorded at a lower volume. I'd probably buy one if I knew what to buy. ------ Dave Hayes - Consultant - Altadena CA, USA - dave@jetcafe.org Now Playing at:

I'll add my vote to this; it would be nice to have an option that would encode these broken wav files. It's a pity some recorde...

Gain control
...or about $600. Of course Aphex will sell you their "combo" unit the "2020" for about $5K retail. If you want something cheaper (and of course not as good sounding) there are a couple of companies that build "compressor/limiters" boxes that run in the $150 range. The Alesis "3630" or the Behringer "Composer Pro MDX2200" can do the job of hard/soft limiting and even some AGC/compression so long as you don't push them too much. If you are interested in a "how to" of setting up your new processing, drop me a line. Tim -- Snail: Tim...

Applying dynamic compression to live audio
On Thu, 4 Apr 2002, Akos Maroy wrote: > can you tell me more about these LADSPA plugins? LADSPA stands for Linux Audio Developer's Simple Plugin API (see http://www.ladspa.org/). Basically, it was pointed out on the linux audio dev (LAD) mailing list that numerous programs were using plugin architectures and all were different. So they fleshed out a plugin API and the rest, as they say,

Vorbis is low on artifacts but EQ isn't good
...ms which are hard to go away even at very high bitrates. My benchmark audio track is composed by me and you can find it here http://www.trombettworks.com/drumswork.php in losslessly compressed version Please have a look at the problem (also documented in that page). The track is composed with an Alesis S4 synthesizer which is known for its very sharp and harsh sounds which put lossy compressors in trouble. This piece in particular is really hard to compress with lossy encoders and I always use it for benchmark because it generates the most evident artifacts and equalization problems I've foun...
