External decoders?
Should we start thinking about including APE, ALAC, etc decoders? it'd make encoding to flac a lot easier, and quicker, just wondering. I mean if nothing else, FFmpeg has free decoders, and Apple released their official ALAC codec awhile back. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Git branch with compiling fixes for win32
...Josh Coalson on this list in a while: is he still running the project? Something else to think about: Apple recently released sources for Apple Lossless reference utilities. It's all under an Apache license. This will (presumably) lead to more software developers spending more time improving ALAC support in their projects, with more reference material available than the unofficial reverse-engineered code (as used in vlc and libavcodec). This will leave Apple with even less reasons to support FLAC in their own products. Anyone with an iPad/iPhone/iPod must install Rockbox to play FLAC files...

Alignment of the StoreInst
Hi Tim, Thanks for the explanation. The above code snippets is actually extracted by bugpoint from MultiSource/Applications/ALAC/encode/alacconvert-encode.test. I get a different result if I cast the pointer to int and mask away the lower two bits and cast the int back to pointer. While casting pointer to int and back to pointer do not cause any problem. Thanks Hongbin On Fri, Dec 16, 2016 at 12:14 PM, Tim Northover <t....

...nts a solid standard that does not need changing. People are selling hardware devices in droves, and they cannot afford to change their firmware every time some random change happens in the FLAC source. It's actually way better that FLAC is not changing. Even when Apple came out with ALAC, their version of FLAC, I noticed that they could not consistently beat FLAC on coding speed and file size. Some audio turns out smaller with ALAC, other audio turns out smaller with FLAC. Overall, the average performance is identical. Apple hired some of the most amazing geniuses of phy...

...e itself. And I dare say much more "portable" (which has been a historical problem with MacOSX I use here, so it is doubly nice to have portable tools like these). Here is proof that EZStream can easily be expanded with simple tools: Since we had to use Apple's Lossless Audio Codec (ALAC) because QuickTime-based apps still can't do FLAC directly, I have been able to find an alac-decoder that'll use stdout, then I simply added a new <decode> section into the .xml file. Automatically EZStream now will recognise .alac/.mp4/.mpa files and convert them on-the-fly to the ch...

A-law and mu-law
Hi Martijn, thank you for your answer. So the problem would be suboptimal compression due to suboptimal assumption about the input signal, right? What I do not understand is how the format of a FLAC format would be affected by supporting A-law and mu-law files as input (and thus output). Despite of suboptimal performance, is it possible to treat 8bit *-law samples as 8bit linear PCM files and

Playing FLAC Files on Audi MMI
...question, or can at least point me in the right direction. I own a 2013 Audi S4 that has the 3G-Plus Multi Media Interface (MMI) with the Bang & Olufsen Sound System. The MMI is able to playback lossy, compressed audio files (MP3, WMA and AAC), but does not have native support for FLAC, ALAC, or WMA Lossless. However, I've read that the MMI system in other 2013 Audi models do have native support for playing back lossless FLAC and WAVE files. Is there some type of FLAC decoder “plug-in” that I can download (or save on to an SD card) that I can then “flash” onto my car’s MMI so...

...codec support streaming? 2. Does the FLAC codec support high definition audio, that is 24-bit/96Khz audio or better, or at least quality better than that of a CD? 3. What are some of the advantages and disadvantages of the FLAC codec, as compared to other codecs such as WMA Lossless or Apple's ALAC? Or if you cannot share information about disadvantages, then what does FLAC do very well, and what applications is it not designed for? If you would like to add anything else that you feel I should include then please do. May I also use the official FLAC documentation? I will cite Mr. Coalson....

...not in keeping with the philosophy behind FLAC: one thing that I regularly say to people who aren't sure about using FLAC is that Josh designed it with no copy protection support: if it was there, someone would only crack it, so it is effectively useless. And that's probably why Apple's ALAC is usually bigger than FLAC for the same uncompressed audio (and why Apple still don't support FLAC in their products). Stopping a pirate from encoding FLAC is similar to stopping a pirate from ripping a copy-protected CD: it's a challenge to be overcome, and it will probably take "th...

Linux users account for 29% of our daily traffic. I blogged about this to my user base (28,000 people on my newsletter) and noted that the VLC playback of opus is flawless: http://blog.magnatune.com/2013/09/opu...

Idea to possibly improve flac?
Hi folks! Due to the fact that more and more users increasingly use MP3 < 320kbps as their source for encoding music, and publish it as flac files, I suggest that something is done in the flac encoder to possible avoid this. My idea is kinda easy/stupid, but might work; Implement a function that use a FFT to check if the input has frequencies > 16kHz, and informs the user that the file
