ACLs are applied recursively to sub mailboxes
...is most noticeable when a user shares his INBOX[0][1] with
others:
User A sets his INBOX acls to "eilprwtsd"
Now User B can see _all_ sub mailboxes and sub sub [...] mailboxes and
their contents of User A:

Bug when using METADATA and ACLs
...ng shared folders, but it is related to ACLs and
METADATA.
The problem appears when a user only has the 'l' (lookup) permission on a
folder and later tries to get METADATA from all his or her folders; a sample
session to ilustrate the problem:
A1 GETACL "foo"

differential SETACL silently fails if no vfile exists
...change then applied. However, no acl
permission is set and no vfile is created for this mailbox in the
process.
This does work as expected (and a file is created) if I set a
non-differential ACL first:

ACL MySQL dict: to_user==from_user entries
...from to the MySQL dict. Se for example this IMAP conversation:

As you can see, user at domain sets the ACL of his INBOX to the same
value it was set before (reading it from the server after this
idempotent write changed the order but none of the flags).
But after "SETACL INBOX user at domain lrwstipekxacd" I see a new entry

Now the attributes are correctly read for the user test at onnet.ch <mailto:test at onnet.ch>, but other users are not able to authenticate anymore.
