Chebyshev Inequality — MVUE
...proach (based on EPA’s guidance found in http://www.epa.gov/oswer/riskassessment/pdf/ucl.pdf). This looks like it should be straight forward, but I am need to calculate an MVUE for the population mean and an MVUE for the population variance, which requires a value (g_n) from a table A7, found in Aitchison and Brown (1969): The lognormal distribution. I have looked across the RSiteSearch and can not seem to find a function that will give me g_n or the MVUE for mean and variance of lognormal distribution. Is there an R function that will give me g_n or will calculate an MVUE for the population mean a...

About compositional data analysis
The compositional data xi=(x_i1,x_i2,...,x_in), for each fixed i , xij>0, and sum(xij)=1; I want to compare the mean( u_i) of several groups i.e. H0: u_1=u_2=...=u_N or H0: u_11=u_21=...=u_N1 Are there any ANOVA tpye tools to do this work in R? Thanks, WEN S Q [[alternative HTML version deleted]]

mixtures as outcome variables
Dear R-users, I have an outcome variable and I'm unsure about how to treat it. Any advice? I have spending data for each county in the state of California (N=58). Each county has been allocated money to spend on any one of the following four categories: A, B, C, and D. Each county may spend the money in any way they see fit. This also means that the county need not spend all the money that

WMF on Unix
A few of you have helpfully sent me references to WMF formats. There is also some code to _read_ it at http://www.csn.ul.ie/~caolan/docs/libwmf.html However, the issue is to _write_ WMF on R under Unix. I am told (by someone who has tried) that the problem is the if you write a WMF file according to the published specs (which were once issued by Microsoft) you find that e.g. Word does not read

Variable Selection for data reduction and discriminant anlaysis
Hello all, I'm dealing with geochemical analyses of some rocks. If I use the full composition (31 elements or variables), I can get reasonable separation of my 6 sources. Then when I go onto do LDA with the 6 groups, I get excellent separation. I feel like I should be reducing the variables to thos that are providing the most discrimination between the groups as this is important

bug in step()?
Folks, There appears to be a bug(?) in step() when used to screen logistic models. The problem appears to be specific to 1.2.1 (or maybe also 1.2.0?), as the proper behavior was observed in earlier versions. When I did the same on the surrogate log linear model, everything seemed okey. The data involved was the detergent data found in earlier editions of MASS, as given below, > detg1

mixture distributions
Dear List, I am looking for a possibility to fit a mixture model under R using maximum likelihood estimation. Venables and Ripley describe a solution working under S+ (in MASS, 3. ed., p. 263) which requires the D system function and deriv3. This solution does not seem to be portable to R or at least I do not realise how. Is there anyone who a) knows how one could make the MASS-method run under

building a formula for glm() with 30,000 independent variables
I would like to use R to perform a logistic regression with about 30,000 independent variables. That's right, thirty thousand. Most will be irrelevant: the intent is to use the regression to identify the few that actually matter. Among other things, this calls for giving glm() a colossal "y ~ ..." formula with thirty thousand summed terms on its right hand side. I build up the
