OT: hardware question
Hi, folks,
I'm installing a RAID controller card for a large external RAID box in
a Dell server. I've got two riser slots available. Here's the question:
the controller card has some large chips on one side, and if I put it
in riser 1, those chips face downwards in the box, blocking ease of
cooling, while if I put it in riser 2, the chips will face up... but be
right over a large

Recommendation for PCI-e SATA RAID 5 card?
Hello:
I am looking for a recommendation for a PCI-e
RAID card for my server. The server has a
PCI-e x16 low profile slot so the card has
to be at most 6.6 inches long x 2.536 inches
high. I would like to use RAID 5 with 3 drives
so I have to have those capabilities.
It has to be CentOS 5.4 compatible (Of course!).
I took a look at the offerings from 3Ware, but
their cards are too long.

What is your data error rate?
After having read this mailing list for a little while, I get the
impression that there are at least some people who regularly
experience on-disk corruption that ZFS should be able to report and
handle. I?ve been running a raidz1 on three 1TB consumer disks for
approx. 2 years now (about 90% full), and I scrub the pool every 3-4
weeks and have never had a single error. From the oft-quoted 10^14

Noise Cancellation of Server Noise
Has anyone come across a device that could cancel out the noise from servers, ie. the fan noise? I have a server rack near my office and would like to see if i can decrease the noise level. It would seem to me that the steady drone of the fans could be cancelled out to a large extent.

controller thats part of the nforce4 chipset?
btw its using the sata_nv driver. Also when I reboot it works fine for a
few hours and then begins to act up again. Its not a heat problem, the
drives have a working fan directly blowing on the drives, and the case
its in has very good airflow.

Noise Cancellation of Server Noise
...Dnese servers are extremely noisy because they have a lot of small fans turning
relatively at high speed. This kind of server cannot be converted to free
standing "tower" form factor.
The other kind of server is sold both in "tower" and rack form factor; they are
bigger the airflow is forced by bigger fans that can turn to a lower speed to
exchange the heat.
If the noise is produced by the rack fans, use, as someone else suggested,
variable speed fans regulated by a temperature sensor.
In essence, you can greatly lower the noise "by design", but if you already h...

Small PC for Asterisk appliance to support 2 x Sangoma A200 (2 x PCIe standard cards)

One of these servers is to support 30 extensions with transacoding g.729 and
the other is to support 10 extensions with transcoding. I don't think there
is anything in between in terms of hardware but any and all suggestions are
welcome.
Remember: Compact, quite, good airflow, powerful, 2 x empty slots one of
which is a PCIe and 2xNIC ports.

Bejeweled 2 & Wine
I am trying to install Bejeweled 2 on Ubuntu 10.10 and im having problems. I am a novice Linux user with some experience, not so much with wine.
I have tried using v 1.2.2 and also 1.3.7. as there was a working test report in the database using the latter.
Here is the error I am getting in terminal after running the exe with wine 1.3.7

What is the 32 GB 2.5-Inch SATA Solid State Drive?

This is from Sun''s catalog for the T5120 server. Would this work well
as a separate ZIL device for ZFS? Is there any way I could use this in
a T2000 server? The brackets appear to be

In the market for a new (old) laptop
Changes at my day job (we have a big merger being finalized), has me in
the market for a new laptop.
They may require me to only run the approved XP build on the system they
provide.
I do not know if they will fund another unit for me or not, so I am
looking to go cheap. Here is what I am looking for:

Difference between ZFS and UFS with one LUN from a SAN
All,
I understand that ZFS gives you more error correction when using two LUNS from a SAN. But, does it provide you with less features than UFS does on one LUN from a SAN (i.e is it less stable).
Thanks,
Shawn

Server hangs on CentOS 5.5
Hi --
I'm running a server which is usually stable, but every
once in a while it hangs. The server is used as a file
store using NFS and to run VMware machines.
I don't see anything in /var/log/messages or elsewhere
to indicate any problem or offer any clue why the system
was hung.
Any suggestions where I might look for a clue?

confusion and frustration with zpool
I have a zpool which has grown "organically". I had a 60Gb disk, I added a 120, I added a 500, I got a 750 and sliced it and mirrored the other pieces.
The 60 and the 120 are internal PATA drives, the 500 and 750 are Maxtor OneTouch USB drives.
The original system I created the 60+120+500 pool on was Solaris 10 update 3, patched to use ZFS sometime last fall (November I believe). In

Going from 6 to 8 disks on ASUS M2N-SLI Deluxe motherboard
My current home fileserver (running Open Solaris 111b and ZFS) has an ASUS
M2N-SLI DELUXE motherboard. This has 6 SATA connections, which are
currently all in use (mirrored pair of 80GB for system zfs pool, two
mirrors of 400GB both in my data pool).
I''ve got two more hot-swap drive bays. And I''m getting up towards 90%
full on the data pool. So, it''s time to expand,
