--dry-run reliability ?
Hi,
I'm using rsync to backup my files. I have also added a pre-backup step where the script checks if there is enough space on the destination for rsync to run successfully. The goal is to make room (delete oldest backups) if that's not the case.
I'm running rsync with -ahAXS --numeric-ids --link-dest options.
For my pre-backup step, I'm currently using the same options + --dry-run --no-h --stats. I then parse the "Total transferred file size" line, add a 20% (!) padding and compare the result with the result of a "df" call on destination.

broken pipe
Hi All,
I have a client and we are trying to create a backup for several
folders on OSX 10.4.11 with rsync 3.0.0pre9. One folder copies fine
but the other three generate this error and I am stumped.
using:
rsync -aHAX --fileflags --crtimes -v
we get;
sending incremental file list
rsync: writefd_unbuffered failed to write 82 bytes [generator]: Broken

broken pipe when working on open files (?), MacOS X, 3.0.2/3.0.3pre2
Hello all,
I have trouble to use rsync (tested with 3.0.2 and 3.0.3pre2) on MacOS X
10.3.
Rsync always seems to stop when working on open files (?). Source is my
laptop
hard disk, destination a USB attached external drive.
If I stop Firefox for instance all runs smoothly.
This is how I built rsync:
#!/bin/bash
# VERSION=3.0.2
VERSION=3.0.3pre2
DIR="rsync-$VERSION"

A small addition to the manpage and "clone mode" suggestion
...e to read:
-a, --archive archive mode; equals -rlptgoD (no -H,-A,-X,-S)
And my second suggestion is an appeal to discuss a possibility of adding
something such as "clone mode", which is actually the archive mode plus the
family of special file properties, so: "rsync -aHAXS ..." rsync's name
itself implies that it is capable of doing any file sync so why wouldn't
there be such option?
Please don't take the report as too picky. It can only be a good thing that
rsync is so mature piece of software that we can discuss such minor issues.
And thank you f...

SElinux suggestions needed: migrating backup service
Hi folks,
normally I have not so much to do with SElinux but I expected to get in touch sooner or later :-)
I migrated a backup-system from El5 to EL6 and the rsync backup process is complaining about selinux attr's now.
client <-> server (fetches via rsync -aHAX)
client# sestatus
SELinux status: disabled
server# sestatus

Hello all,
I was eager to test the fresh release with MacOS X using "bbouncer"
This is how I compiled and run the tests:
patch -p1 <patches/osx-create-time.diff
patch -p1 <patches/fileflags.diff
./prepare-source
patch -p1 <patches/backup-dir-dels.diff
./configure
make
make test
sudo make install
Then compiling and running "bbouncer" from

Passed all tests with flying colors on Mac OS X 10.4.11 - synopsis of installation and testing
Awesome work Wayne. I have been following the various threads about
running rsync 3.0.0 on MacOS X 10.4.11 and wanted to confirm that
following all the various bits of advice yields a clean running rsync
(as tested by backup bouncer).
I am running MacOS X 10.4.11 on PPC. The following is a synopsis of
my installation procedure (as gathered from the various emails in the
archive) - note
