For virtualization, we've developed virtio_ring for efficient communication. This would also work well for userspace-kernel communication, particularly for things like the tun device. By using the same ABI, we can join guests to the host kernel trivially. These patches are fairly alpha; I've seen some network stalls I have to track down and there are some fixmes. I will get a smbd process started. (If this is incorrect please let me know ;) But this morning I did a quick ps -ax on my machine and found *two* smbd -D in the process list. But as far as I know there is no connection to the samba server right now. Please note that Windows 9x clients are not true members of a domain for reasons outlined in this article. Therefore the protocol for support Windows 9x style domain logons is completely different from NT4 domain logons and has been officially supported for some time. Did you read this document?
