Random number generation
Hi All.
(This is probably an incredibly stupid question :))
I have just noticed that every time I start an R2.3 session and request
a random number (say with rnorm) that I receive the same number. AFAIK I
have not set a seed at any point. Returning to an older version of
R(v1.8) I get the behaviour that I have come to expect, where a new seed
is automatically generated for each new session

wicked wikis for R
...ld be very useful. As the mailing list grows, so does the wiki, except the information flow from the mailing list is more controlled and fine-tuned as to what goes in there and what stays in the mailing list.
Among others, here's one long-term benefit for the newbies. Instead of people getting admonished/thrashed with harsh expressions/advices like "go see the mailing list publishing etiquettes", or "you should search the archives and help files, and read all manuals, and ask others first before posting here..." (which can turn away many a newcomer from posting or using the mail...

How to change the value of a class slot
I defined an S4 class with a slot i. Then I wrote a regular function
that attempted to increment i.
This didn't work, apparently because of the general rule that a function
can't change the values of its arguments outside the function. I gather
there are ways around it, but the Green book admonishes "cheating on the
S evaluation model is to be avoided" (p. 190).
Thinking that

I'm with Nicolas Kovacs. I thought your post was factual and funny. I
felt the reply you got was kinda rude and I had the impression the poster
didn't actually read what you wrote, preferring to infer insult where none
was offered. In my opinion, the folks who admonished you don't know what
they're talking about.

I stand pleased to be humbled and admonished, I honestly can not
remember where i heard it from but I figured for at least my own
knowledge I would ask if it was true. If I hear it again, I will do my
best to lay that one to rest.

Normality test
Dear Sir,
I am writing to inquire about normality test given in nortest package. I
have a random data set consisting of 300 samples. I am curious about which
normality test in R would give me precise measurement, whether data sample
is following normal distribution. As p value in each test is different in
each test, if you could help me identifying a suitable test in R for this
medium size of

About syslinux and ID byte for kernels
syslinux.doc:
"...To bzImage and recent zImage kernels, SYSLINUX 1.30 and higher will
identify using the ID byte 0x31. PXELINUX identifies using the ID
byte 0x32, and ISOLINUX 0x33. The ID range 0x34-0x3f is reserved for
future versions or derivatives of SYSLINUX...."
Is this info available after boot in /proc or similar, or is it just
something the kernel is told and keeps for

[ext3] umount /var ext3 partition
I don't see any mention of this in the archives and maybe it's a stupid
question but...
I have a separate partition for /var and it is an ext3 partiition. When I
try to reboot, /etc/rc.d/init.d/halt tries to umount all the filesystems
(other than /proc, /, etc) but it fails on attempting to umount /var. I
am pretty sure that this is because kjournald is using it.
Does anyone have any

The R Foundation announces new mailing list 'R-package-devel'
New Mailing list *** R-package-devel -- User R Packages Development ***
At last week's monthly meeting, the R foundation has decided to
create a new mailing list in order to help R package authors in
their package development and testing.
The idea is that some experienced R programmers (often those
currently helping on R-devel or also R-help) will help package
authors and thus unload

FreeBSD - Secure by DEFAULT ?? [hosts.allow]
Hi,
I need to know what the implications are to make use of the hosts.allow file
on a FreeBSD Production Server (ISP Setup)? The reason I'm asking, is that
I've recently decommisioned a Linux SendMail Server to a FreeBSD Exim
Server, but with no Firewall (IPTABLES) yet.
Besides the fact that it only runs EXIM and Apache, is it necessary to
Configure rc.Firewall? or can I only make use of

OT - C structure question
I hae tried searching the web for the answer, but, man is there a lot of
pages ... :(
in the language I develop in, if I have a structure I can dynamically
refer to the contents of a field of the structure like so:
MESSAGE SomeStructure:Field(SomeFieldName):Value
where SomeFieldName is either a quoted constant or a variable expressions
In "C", I beleive that you can refer to

[LLVMdev] omission: clang-cc -MD -MF -c -fPIC
Hi,
I do not really have much direct control over the compile lines any more.
I guess I could code up a wrapper for your wrapper so that the libtool wrapper
would be happy, but could you all consider libtool built projects and
embed the necessary option stripping in your clang-cc thing?
Thank you.
