Preferred method for setting customer facts?
I''ve checked out the page on adding custom facts for Facter and I see that there are a number of ways to do this. Is there a preferred method of setting system-wide facts? In this case, I''d like to set a "Location" fact which represents the data centre a server is in. Cheers, James *********************************************************************************

Custom fact errors
I''m a newbie attempting to get a custom fact distributed to clients. I''ve followed the instructions at http://reductivelabs.com/trac/puppet/wiki/AddingFacts and based my first fact on a simple recipe. I''m having at least one problem and possibly more. 1) Puppet/facter fails to load the custom fact, complaining that "non- sh interpreters are not currently supported" 2) Puppet seems to be loading the fact twice (though that may be be...

adding facts
Hello, I''m a little confused how to configure the puppermaster and puppetd to add a new fact. I''ve followed this tutorial http://reductivelabs.com/trac/puppet/wiki/AddingFacts but I''m with doubts about the factsource. In my puppetmaster I have the new fact in /etc/puppet/facts directory. fileserver.conf (on puppetmaster server): [files] path /etc/puppet/files [facts] path /etc/puppet/facts puppet.conf (on client): [puppetd] logdir=/var/log/puppet vardir=/v...

Decisions made based on nework or Ip address.
I need to be able to set up several server settings (DNS/Zabbix/etc) based on the network that a server is connected to. Could someone show me a straight forward way of doing this? if generate supported pipes I might be able to swing this but apparently I need some help. --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google

Facter infinite looping on custom facts
...ndard software on the server. # ruby -v ruby 1.8.7 (2009-04-08 patchlevel 160) [i686-linux] # facter -v 1.5.5 RUBYLIB=/apps/puppet/puppet/lib:/apps/puppet/facter/lib:/data/puppet/lib I have 2 custom Ruby fact files in /data/puppet/lib/facter which follow http://reductivelabs.com/trac/puppet/wiki/AddingFacts dc_loc.rb (http://pastie.org/530294) - reads a file generated during a kickstart with the Kickstart environment in name=value pairs and makes them facts. Generates the important "location" fact. facts.rb (http://pastie.org/530296) - Uses the "location" fact to load up location...

Expanding Facter's manufacturer.rb
I''ve just filed http://reductivelabs.com/trac/puppet/ticket/1182 with the aim of making it easier to add fact pickup from dmidecode in manufacturer.rb. As the ticket says, I think that the fact sections, keys and values shouldn''t be hardcoded in manufacturer.rb, but should be stored in a configuration file somewhere. This means that a given stable installation of Puppet can be

Specifying geographic related facts
Let''s say I have two different geographic sites. They are pretty much identical ie. each site has a machine called web1 which is a web server, etc. Except there are couple site-specific settings ie. outgoing DNS servers are different, SSL certs are different etc. On the puppetmaster I can put in a file called e.g. /etc/sideid which would uniquely identify a site ie. siteX or siteY.
