How do I break my addiction to for loops!?!?
I know I'm not supposed to use them... but they're just so easy! I
have trouble defining an appropriate function for plyr or apply!
data<-rnorm(144)
groups1<-c('a','b','c','d')
groups2<-c('aa','bb','cc','dd')

spreadsheet addiction
There's a new page on the Burns Statistics website
http://www.burns-stat.com/pages/Tutor/spreadsheet_addiction.html
that looks at spreadsheets from a quality assurance perspective. It
presents R as a suitable alternative to spreadsheets. Also there are
several specific problems with Excel that are highlighted, including
the status of statistical functionality in Excel.

removing for loop
Dear Rusers,
Trying to reduce my for loops addiction,
could somebody tell me if there are ways to simplify
(and perhaps accelerate ?) the following line
for (i in 1:N) for (j in 1:N) m[i,j] = b[i]-b[j];
(where m is a NxN matrix and b a vector of length N)
Thanks for any hint.

RAID advice? and KVM advice?
Hello All,
In the not too distant future I will be commissioning a new CentOS
(5.4?) box with 4 identical SATA drives. I'd like to set them up as
RAID 1+0 for speed and redundancy. I've read the RHEL 5 deployment
guide on raid setup and it seems to cover the basics of software raid
pretty well, but doesn't cover 1+0. Does anyone have a reference for
that kind of

Scale
I would like to get horizontal numbers on the both axes: X and Y.
I got horizontal numbers only on the Y axis when adding las=2,
How to obtain a horizontal orientation for number on scale also for the X axis
(now they are vertical)? Here is my code:
plot(survfit(Y~addicts$clinic), fun="cloglog", las=2)

ftp issue in Centos 5.3
I manage a small server that I back up weekly. I do this by making a
tarball of relevant files then transferring it over the local subnet
to my station (Fedora 11), whereupon I burn it to DVD. There is no
optical burner on the server. The tarball amounts to a bit under 5
gigs. Recently I've started getting an error telling me to try PASV or
PORT first. I use the gFTP client on my

pnorm
Dear R list,
I calculated a two-sided p values according to 2*(1-pnorm(8.104474)), which gives 4.440892e-16. However, it appears to be 5.30E-16 by a colleague and 5.2974E-16 from SAS. I tried to get around with mvtnorm package but it turns out to be using pnorm for univariate case. I should have missed some earlier discussions, but for the moment is there any short answer for a higher

yum issue with extras repo?
Hello All,
As you can see below I am having a problem checking for updates. This
happens repeatedly. I have to kill the process then rerun. I have
tried "yum clean all" but no joy - the process hangs again on "extras"
- see second listing below. Suggestions?

Setup speed dials on Cisco 7921
I've added lines like this:
speeddial = 123,test
speeddial = 260,Bob
in the [device] section for my 7921, but the speed dials do NOT appear on
the menu (click right from the main screen). Am I missing something obvious
here?
Thanks

using index of a loop as a macro variable
Hi,
I'm a long-time STATA user and a R newbie. I'm doing ok, but I'm addicted
to STATA macro variables. Is there something like a macro variable in R?
Specifically, I'd like to be able to do something like
for (i in 1:3) {
.....
x`i' <- ...
}
where R would resolve x`i' to the objects named x1, x2 and x3 as I move
through the loop. I guess I could create these in

Grandstream GXP2000 resetting all the time
All,
I have AAH 1.0 installed using Digium TDM04B and Grandstream GXP2000 phones.
All seems well other than the phones have to be reset up to 5 times per day.
It is like they lose thier ip connection or maybe thier SIP connection. Has
anyone else experienced this issue? I have the phones set for static IP
addresses and that doesnt seem to help either. Any help would be greatly

"Cannot execute binary file" with several distros
Lately I've been finding that most versions of Syslinux no longer work
in the various linux distros I use them in (primarily Mandriva 2006
and Finnix.) When I try to run binaries such as the extlinux it
produces the error "bash: ./extlinux/extlinux: cannot execute binary
file" which it says for each of the major binaries. As nearly as I
can tell, everything but the scripts in fact.
