[LLVMdev] Need to create symbols only once
...is, there are magic symbol names which reference the beginning or ending of any particular section. To support this, the linker lazily creates atoms when references to these magic symbols are discovered during resolving. I have some hooks for this already in place in lld: 1) There is Writer::addFiles(). This method gives any writer a change to add files/atoms to the set of atoms the Resolver works on. The Writer::addFiles() method is called after all input files are added. If you want to add something lazily (like darwin linker does for section$start$ symbols), the writer returns a File obj...

[LLVMdev] Need to create symbols only once
Hi Nick, We have few symbols like __bss_start, __bss_end, which are Undefined symbols in the code. I want a way in the Reader to create specific atoms before the linker bootstraps. I didnt find a way to do that with the existing interfaces. The way it needs to work is as below :- 1) ReaderELF creates Absolute symbols (for __bss_start, __bss_end etc) 2) ReaderELF reads each file and adds

[LLVMdev] Need to create symbols only once
Thanks for the reply Nick. I will use the Writer::addFiles functionality. Do you want to move the SimpleFile class to lld/Core ? It might be useful for other types of object files too(like for ELF here). How does typeFirstInSection/typeLastinSection know that the addresses that need to be used for those symbols are the symbol values for the section st...

[LLVMdev] [lld] -emit-yaml doesnot contain linker added symbols specified with command line options
...tes the undefined atoms. I am in the process of adding more options and I would like the atoms created internally by the options available in the output YAML file. The options that I am trying to consider for the linker internal atoms to appear in the output YAML file are :- a) Replace Writer::addFiles to Reader::addFiles This would achieve any file to be added to the list of input files that is processed. (or) b) Create a seperate API in the inputGraph for the driver to add lld::Files, that are consumed by the Universal driver and that gets added to the list of...

...by the -u option, but the problem I have is each flavor has extra command line options for which it wants to create a DefinedAtom/UndefinedAtom. The flavor also may want to add extra linker internal files in the future. I prefer addImplicitFiles calling the reader to add more files, which means addFiles API moves to the reader. But won’t that fail too if you were using a YAML Reader and ELF Writer? Since we are talking about files/atoms that are created because of command line options, perhaps the Driver should be creating the files/atoms. In the case of -u, it would be nice to group them all...

Building libjpeg-turbo with LTO
Adding a couple of lld folks. I helped Shishir debug this, the link line looked like: /home/sjessu/build/bin/clang -O0 -flto -o jcstest jcstest.o ./.libs/libjpeg.a and the issue was that libjpeg.a was created with the system ar instead of llvm-ar. It worked when recreating libjpeg.a with llvm-ar. I noticed that the lld code has some special handling for the case when there is a missing
