file_column and HABTM
I have several models that will be using file_column by way of the
"Picture" class (HABTM). Right now, all pictures are stored in:
public/picture/image/1/filename1.jpg
public/picture/image/2/filename2.jpg
Is there a way I can dynamically define the "store_dir" based on the
model? For example, if I have "user", "product" and "place" models all

Multiple Models w/ acts_as_ferret
I have multiple models all with:
acts_as_ferret :fields => [...]
(models = profiles, blogs, comments )
When I restart the server and perform any crud operation on one of the
above models, the index is created/updated. If I then go and perform
any crud operation on ANOTHER model, ...the index from that first model
is being updated.
Any ideas? Can acts_as_ferret handle this?
Thanks

form_remote_upload plugin
form_remote_tag does not support the input type=file. This is due to
javascript security limitations. I created a plugin that modifies
form_remote_tag so that if you pass it the option: :html =>
{:multipart => true}, it will submit via an iframe, allowing you to
upload files. It works nicely with file_column :). Currently, it
only works with RJS templates (no :update option), and I only

Textmate "e ." in the Video
>From the newbie corner...
In the demo video our illustrious Rails guru summons textmate with "e
." from the command line, magically opening textmate within the
context of the respective rails app.
I downloaded textmate, love it, but want to know how to make the same
magic happen from the command line, rather than having to open the app
via gui in the Applications folder.
Thanks.

Is fork { } safe inside of a worker? How else may this be done...
I have a BackgrounDRb worker running every 2 minutes. Here''s the basic idea:
- events = Event.find_all_pending( 2.minutes )
- while( all events have yet to be processed )
---- if( Time.now <= event.time_to_process )
------- fork { process_event }
--- end
--- sleep( 0.25 )
- end
- puts "Done..."
Events that need to be processed within the next 2 minutes are loaded and

HABTM - Destroy just the relationship
If I have a HABTM relationship between two models (places, pictures),
can I delete the record from the join table without also destroying the
objects?
IE:
1. @places.pictures << @picture
2. @places.pictures.find( @picture.id ).destroy
I''d want line #2 (...or something similar unless I''m way off) to destroy
the record in pictures_places only, and not anything from the

FAILED: "test" should equal "test" - what?
I''m trying out rspec_on_rails with a very simple test:

Product.find( :all ).first.name.should_equal ''test''
end

with this fixture:

id: 1
name: test
When I run it:

FileColumn - Validate Before Saving
file_column is great -- but I need a way to run through the validations
(ie: validates_file_format_of) before saving. That is, when a user first
uploads an image it is displayed in the view but not ''saved'' until they
click the ''Save'' button on the form. I want to display an error
message/disable the ''Save'' button if the file they just

ANN: acts_as_ferret
Hi all
This week I have worked with Rails and Ferret to test Ferrets (and Lucenes)
capabilities. I decided to make a mixin for ActiveRecord as it seemed the
simplest possible solution and I ended up making this into a plugin.
For more info on Ferret see:
http://ferret.davebalmain.com/trac/
The plugin is functional but could easily be refined. Anyway I want to share it
with you. Regard it as a

Apache Setup, static site = site.com, rails = site.com/rails
I have a static site at:
http://www.site.com
and I want Aails site to live at:
http://www.site.com/cms
(so that I can have the two sites communicate via AJAX without security
issues)
Is this possible using Apache? Maybe somebody point in the right
direction. I''m pretty good with httpd.conf, but haven''t figured out the
right directives to get this going.
Thanks

has_one / HABTM relationship overlap - please advise
1. I have a few tables: ''users'', ''shops'', ''addresses'', and ''pictures''.
2. Users and Shops will both use the addresses and pictures tables. I have
created several mapping tables:
addresses_shops
pictures_shops
addresses_users
pictures_users
3. Users CAN have many addresses and pictures (simple HABTM), but...

Merb - Losing connection to MySQL
Hello,
Once or twice a day I''m losing connection to MySQL and this error is
generated:
