CentOS 7 + Dell Latitude E6420 laptop = thermal shutdown
...t helps. I don't
know that I've tried doing that with Dell's utility before, but I'll
give it a shot.
I setup a short loop to append the output of /usr/bin/sensors to a log
file and then call 'sync' just after.
This is the last entry just before the system shut down:

CentOS 7 + Dell Latitude E6420 laptop = thermal shutdown
Hi,
Thanks for reading this.
I installed CentOS 7 (tried the latest ISO image and the previous build) on the laptop and got to the point where I am logging into the desktop environment and the laptop just shuts down. I check the event log in BIOS and find that a thermal event has occurred and the system powered off to prevent damage.
I can take the same laptop with Windows 7 installed and run

Sound Volume Setting At Login
Hey all,
When I log on my sound level is set at about 35%. I have to use the
sound preferences to turn the sound level up every time I log in.
Other users on this same system do not have this issue. When they log
in their volume is set at 100%.
This leads me to believe that there must be something in my local
settings that is turning down my sound volume settings.
Does anyone have a clue

old hardware / minimal netinstall -> CPU fan control
...s going at full speed constantly. Not a real problem apart from
(a) it will affect the fan's lifespan and (b) it's noisy.
I've done some Googling and found some help. I've installed lm_sensors and run
sensors-detect.
After reboot I get the following:
[root at harpo ~]# sensors
acpitz-virtual-0
Adapter: Virtual device
temp1: +40.0?C (crit = +75.0?C)
[root at harpo ~]#
which implies that it can read the CPU temp, but the fan is still going at
full speed. Can anyone suggest what I need to do next to enable fan speed
control?
