What TERMINAL software do you use for MS Windows platform and WHY?
Hi Everyone,
I am accustomed to PUTTY and it's very nice as in it allows many many SSH
profiles to be saved and allows tunneling etc....but it's not very good when
it comes to scrolling up and down, colors, text size, and specially it
doesn't give a title to the opened instance. Maybe giving the IP address as
the t...

KVM as a desktop
I am nearing the end of a project that moved our disparate services
and hosts onto kvm virtualized servers. What I am now contemplating
is setting up my desktop as a virtual host and using one of the guests
as my primary workstation.
However, I am not sure how this would work in practice. I am
accustomed to working with virtual instances via ssh (a terminal
window) and with my desktop system in a Gnome window manager. Is
there a reference somewhere that outlines the mechanics of logging
into a virtual guest's graphical desktop directly from the physical
console of the kvm host system?

New user
...ey everybody!
I am a new linux user who's just migrated to linux from windows vista and I also happen to be a desktop user and I've been using linux for hardly a week and so it would be very helpful if you guys could give me a few links and/or a few tips&tricks that would help me to get accustomed to linux and also some things that would help me feel at home in linux ( books would also be of great help to me )

Calculating with tolerances
Dear list,
I am from an engineering background, accustomed to work with tolerances.
For example, I have measured
Q = 0.15 +- 0.01 m^3/s
H = 10 +- 0.1 m
and now I want to calculate
P = 5 * Q * H
and get a value with a tolerance +-
What is the elegant way of doing this in R?
Thank you,

copying and pasting to R in linux
When I use R, I am accustomed to developing programs in a text processor, and
then copying from the text processor and pasting into R. This usually works
fine, except that using the default text processor in Suse 9.0, long programs
don't transfer completely. Using the 'source' program, also only works with
small...

Logistic Regression in R (SAS -like output)
Hello useRs,
I have a problem at hand which I'd think is fairly common amongst
groups were R is being adopted for Analytics in place of SAS.
Users would like to obtain results for logistic regression in R that
they have become accustomed to in SAS.
Towards this end, I was able to propose the Design package in R which
contains many functions to extract the various metrics that SAS
reports.
If you have suggestions pertaining to other packages, or sample code
that replicates some of the SAS outputs for logistic regression, I
would b...

Using Apache 2.2 config files on Apache 2.4
...sary.
I've got a C7 server loaded and the basic configuration partially
completed. All the packages I need to replace the old server are in
place. But I've reached a point where something has come up and I don't
know the answer to:
Can I use the configuration files and methods I'm accustomed to from
apache 2,2 from my C5 server with Apache 2.4 on the new C7 server?
I've been looking at the way thing are done with Apache 2.4 on C7 and in
regards to SSL configuration I really don't care for it. It seems
convoluted and a bit unnecessarily complicated. /I'm sure there's a...

Rails and JRuby
Has anyone attempted to run Rails inside of JRuby?
Is that even possible?
Aside from the performance implications, is it a bad idea?
I''m thinking that it might be useful in very rare cases where a
Ruby/Rails - equivalent of a Java solution may not exist yet.
Any thoughts?

Another attempt for a Team page
...I believe the project itself is ready for a reorganisation.
My goals with a page like this are:
- Put a name behind the nick, or a nick behind the name. For those that
want it, put a face behind name/nick. Make the community about people
so people can easier associate. Not everyone is accustomed to nicknames
yet !
- Make it apparent who is in charge of what, give people a (public)
responsibility so that new contributors know who to talk to, but also
to make it clear that if you are no longer up to the task you step down
from it. (Currently this often is fuzzy, people may...

Question about storage for virtualisation
...etup of each vm is rather simple. The minimal
OS, updates, my own httpd, my own php a couple of other packages. So
restoring a VM from scratch can take less than an hour. So I was
thinking of not taking snapshot of the whole VM and only sync the data
partition.
As for the guest paritions, I am accustomed of separating my servers
disks with separate /, /usr, /var, /home and /data partitions. I can't
recall today why I started doing this, 15 years ago, but I still like it
that way and continue to do so. Do I still "need" to do this with VMs ?
Thanks for the help !

Revisiting mime-types and file extensions
Hi,
I'm in the process of adding support for Markdown to a minimal CMS in
Rails, [Railfrog][railfrog], which uses mime types to select appropriate
processing. I have had a look through the archives but have not been
able to see that a consensus has emerged as to what such a mime type for
Markdown should look like. My reading of the RFCs suggests that it
should be within the "text/*"

Asterisk integration with office PBX
...frequently said - Asterisk is great, and I really appreciate all the work you folks have put into it.
How have some of you gone about integrating Asterisk with a legacy office PBX, such that the end-user can use a regular office (digital handset) and dialing is fairly seamless ?
Our end-users are accustomed to picking up their office handset and just dialing a 4 digit extension to reach another staffperson in our office. I'd like to replicate that so they can reach staff in our other (international) offices (behind the scenes, the call would route over IP).
For instance, we have regular NEC hands...

Survey proportions... Can I use population as denominator?
Just giving the survey package a spin...
I'm accustomed to stata, and it seems very similar in many respects. One
thing is throwing me, however.
I've gotten my data in, and specified the design. Looks like the weighting
is right (based on published population estimates from these data), but now
I'd like to check my "marginal means" fo...

Accessing sub diagonals / spdiag in R ?
Hello, I'm attempting to access a specific number of sub diagonals in a
MATRIX and have been accustomed to using spdiags in MATLAB or Octave. I've
got a solution pieced together using for loops and it works though isn't
vectorized and liable to run very slow
for large matrices.
As an example:
A =
1 2 3 4 5
9 8 7 6 5
4 5 6 7 8
5 4 3 2 1
8 7 6 0 1
The subdiagonals are: 9,5,3,0 4,4,6 5,7...

lme4 / HLM question
I'm hoping that this is a relatively easy question for someone familiar with
the lme4 package.
I'm accustomed to using HLM software and writing a simple 2 level [null]
equation like this:
L1 - Yij = b0 + e
L2 - b0 = B00 + u0
The following command in R provides results that are identical to the HLM
program.
results <- lmer( Y ~ 1 |id , PanelData4)
I can't seem to find any exampl...

Predicted values from a logistic model
Hello -
I apologize if this question is simple/obvious, but I couldn't find a
satisfactory answer online, and I am not very accustomed to working
with R (Matlab is my poison. :-)). Any help would be greatly
appreciated.
I have a model with a three-level factor and a continuous covariate.
The call I use is:
mymodel <- glm(Response ~ Factor_covariate + continuous_covariate -

Touchpad doesn't work with C6, kernel-related...
...problem is that the latest CentOS6 kernel
(2.6.32-358.2.1.el6.x86_64) doesn't appear to recognize these. Or it
otherwise ignores them. I did append the parameters, but (unlike in
Fedora) the touchpad is still dead.
This laptop is to be used by a noob user who needs a LTS distro and is
already accustomed to CentOS, so a more modern distro like Fedora or
Ubuntu is not an option.
What can be done about this? Would a CentOSplus kernel work? It is
somehow too lousy to tell the client "The touchpad of your brand-new
laptop doesn't work because CentOS is too old, use an USB mouse
instead"....
