linux-2.4.9-ac5, ext3 and disk quota
Hello, I am going to set up a new file server ("smb" and "nfs") machine for the local network of my former school. Therefore I've just downloaded and successfully compiled "linux-2.4.9-ac5" (including "disk quota support" and, of course, support for "ext3 file system"). I've read the statement: | ... | | The quota code in the -ac kernels is very different, and once that gets | merged into Linus' tree we shall continue development and testing of...

ext3 performance issue with a Berkeley db application
...subject to serious performance problems; on the machine that needs 24 minutes to build from a 200-Mb mbox, rebuilding the database from a list of tokens took eight seconds -- this was on ext3 in ordered mode. These data were obtained on machines running linux kernels 2.4.21-pre3-ac4 and -ac5 and 2.4.21-pre4-ac1; kernel 2.4.20-ac2 appears to give similar results though this has not been thorougly tested. Results like those reported were initially obtained with db-3.1.17; the tests shown here used db-4.1.25. More info available on request; tuning hints most gratefully received and test...

Extended Attributes and Access Control Lists
Hello, I have today released an initial version of extended attributes and access control lists for ext3 (patch against the 2.4.13-ac3 kernel). Eric Jarman <ejarman@acm.org> has contributed a lot to this effort. Since I'm not very much into the innards of ext3, can some of you please take a look at the patch, and see whether it contains any flaws (and tell me which flaws)? Thanks! The

strange share violation
..... I tried Fake Oplock with no success.. The _interesting_ thing is that on Novell it had the same problem but the solution was to set the files with the flag SHAREABLE ("flag * sh") ! Now IMHO nothing equal exists on Linux.. so, please could you help me ?? I'm running Linux 2.2.10-ac5, Samba 2.0.4b (from Rawhide) .. btw: I have no problem with more users reading the same file, just with this catalogue program.. thanks in advance! Marek Les

e2fsprogs failed 7 tests

I think those failed tests should be resolved but I don't know how and what's the problem behind it. A co-worker tested it on an almost identical machine (identical machine, but Debian installed) and it worked for him. So the proble...

ext3-2.4-0.9.4
An update to the ext3 filesystem for 2.4 kernels is available at http://www.uow.edu.au/~andrewm/linux/ext3/ The diffs are against linux-2.4.7 and linux-2.4.6-ac5. The changelog is there. One rarely-occurring but oopsable bug was fixed and several quite significant performance enhancements have been made. These are in addition to the performance fixes which went into 0.9.3. Ted has put out a prelease of e2fsprogs-1.23 which supports filesystem type `auto...

...ing the > oplock = false or any other tweaking is needed. I don't know if your "access denied" and "file already open by someone" errors will be solved by setting "oplocks = false". However, I'd like you to know that I'm using Samba 2.2.0 on Linux 2.4.5-ac5 and I do have "oplocks = false". Why did I do this? I migrated to 2.2.0 on a new server when I set it up. The old server as running Samba 2.0.7, also on Linux (kernel 2.2.19) without problems for quite awhile already. My network is composed of mostly Windows 95 OSR2 clients with Microsof...
