My reading is that you will have to compile the package yourself after you have downloaded the hdf windows dll from hdf.ncsa.uiuc.edu The instructions are in win.readme.txt of the package source which you can download at planetmirror or aarnet. I think the use of the hdf dll is the reason a windows binary cannot be made available for direct download. We see absolutely dismal performance from Canberra to Perth via Aarnet or Grangenet (gig connections across the country). With standard rsync on a tuned tcp stack, we see about 700k/s. I just got a G4 running MacOS 10.3 today, so I immediately downloaded R from CRAN. To my disappointment, it insists on installing in a fixed place and requires a root password to do so. University policy is that if your machine is on the net, you WON'T get root access nohow, unless you're a designated sysadmin, which I'm not. Is there any alternative to downloading a source
