64-bit Windows advanced server 2003 hangs
I just had the unpleasant experience of crashing a production server _twice_ when trying to access a file share. The server is 64-bit Windows 2003 on an itanium3. My box is RedHat Linux 8.0 with Samba 3.0.0-2. Here's some messages from syslog: Mar 19 09:13:58 hedron automount[1037]: attempting to mount entry /dborg/POS Mar 19 09:13:58 hedron mount.smbfs[23153]: [20...

rpvm/snow packages on a cluster with dual-processor machi nes
Caveat: I've only played with this a couple of years ago... I believe you can just add each host _twice_ (or as many times as the number of CPUs at that host) to get both CPUs to work. Andy From: Paul Y. Peng > > Hi, > > does anybody know how to use the dual processors in the > machines of a cluster? I am using R with rpvm and snow > packages. I usually start pvm daemon and add...

update: Win2kPro's TCP/IP Stack is crippled!
...ped) Samba config file changes: socket options = TCP_NODELAY SO_SNDBUF=65536 SO_RCVBUF=65536 max xmit = 65536 read size = 65536 getwd cache = Yes locking = Yes The various shares have "use sendfile = yes" Initial testing shows that the Windows 2000 Server stack is almost _twice_ as fast as the Windows 2000 Pro stack. It's unbelievable that Microsoft would cripple their product this way. One of the test runs is available at http://www.mixdown.ca/~andrew/win2ks-win2kp.png. There are three transfers. Ignore the first. The second is an ~1.3GB transfer from Samba...

Pam_mount not working with "sec=krb5"
...or the "uid=..." option, but not for "cruid=...". I tested this many times. So I figured that somehow the "cruid=..." use by pam_mount happens too early at a stage where this request returns empty (or something else). To test this, I put the same volume description _TWICE_ into the "/etc/security/pam_mount.conf.xml". And voilĂ : pam_mount works! So as a temporary solution I have a dummy mount in the pam_mount.conf.xml to make sure that the %(USERUID) variable is set correctly when it is needed: <volume fstype="cifs" server="server&quot...

[patch] Let's use <%== %> instead of <%= raw() %>
I''ve submitted a small patch to make Rails behave properly with the Erubis <%== %> construct. For some reason the current behaviour of that tag in Rails 3 is to escape the contents _twice_ which is probably a bug. I offer three suggestions why this is a good idea: - The syntax is cleaner. It can avoid a lot of .html_safe and raw in your views. I especially like the conciseness of <%=== ''<b>Alert</b>'' if level<0 %> better then the alternative w...

Don't make cookie-stored sessions a default
Hi! Before Rails 2.0 is coming, I suggest not to make CookieStore the default session storage. It stores clear-text values on the client-side and the integrity check hash can be brute-force attacked. I understand that this has been set due to speed advantages, but I believe it''s better to make better security a default. I''ve written a blog post about this
