large smb.conf file
I have about 5000 distinct shares defined in my smb.conf file. As you can imagine it's quite large.
Everyone once in awhile all the smbd daemons ( in top ) go to a run state and pretty much bring the system to a halt. The system is WAY oversized. 99.999% of the day samba runs fine. We _THINK_ we've narrowed down the times when the smbd processes go crazy to a time when we're updating the smb.conf file. Does this sound reasonable? Is there a better way to create the neccessary shares?
Thanks

fts_solr: Lookup failed: 400 Bad Request / GET null null
...OR hdrs)
&fq=%2Bbox:f696f93xxxxxx6e+%2Buser:user at domain.de HTTP/1.1
The total request size is 31708 bytes and it contains many (hundreds?)
of 'OR hdrs' (side note: I wonder which client action triggers these
kind of requests, maybe the user selected hundreds of mails for
search?)
I _think_ this is a problem of the URL length / max http header size.
(Debian Jessie) Tomcat7 very likely does not accept more than 32kb
data in a request.
I wonder if Dovecot should limit SOLR requests to a specific size and
deny long requests with an imap error (?)

That's madness. That document changes from version to version as to what
we _think_ the actual hardware does. It is _NOT_ a specification.
You cannot design hardware from that. Its incomplete and fails to
specify a bunch of things. It not a mathematically sound definition of a
memory model.

newbie profile path problem
Hi all,
I've been working on setting up samba for a small home network, 3
win98se machines, and RH9 with samba 2.2.7
Roving profiles are working, with domain logins, just fine. The problem
I'm having is that although I _think_ I've set it up properly, the
profile items get copied into the users home directory, not the the
directory I've set up.
I've gone through all the faqs and doc files I could find, but still
can't seem to get it to work. Could someone point out the probably very
obvious thing I'...

using dynamic element ids with visual_effect
Mike and I demo an Ajaxified version of the Depot application in the
Rails Studio. Part of the demo is a cart in the sidebar which updates
when you add a product to it. As well as updating the div, it also
highlights the most recently added link item. Right now, we do it with:

Change in behaviour for the "%U" substitution in 4.10.8?
I imagine the numeric UID is my old boss who left the company a few years ago, and by this point his account has been removed, not just disabled. The only thing contained by the DOMAIN directory is a home directory for each user, which is owned by them. So I don't _think_ this is the problem.
The command you suggested returns:
winbind_lookup_rids failed: WBC_ERR_DOMAIN_NOT_FOUND
The ACLs are to allow --x access for the 'www-data' into users home directories for use with Apache+mod_userdir, and then r-x access for their www directory

If statement based on a action
Question for you all is it possible to use an action in an if
statement? I am using the same form for edit and new and I have a
cancel button on the page.
This cancel button is built with an if statement that looks right now
to see if a parameter exists to define where to go back to if the
user cancel. The problem occurs when the user submits the form and
there are missing fields by

Frames in compiled functions
I noticed some problems that cropped in the latest versions of R-devel (2016-11-08 r71639 in my case) for one of my packages. I _think_ I have narrowed it down to the changes to what gets byte-compiled by default. The following example run illustrates the problem I'm having:
compiler::enableJIT(0)
fun <- function(x) local(as.list(parent.frame(2)))
fun(1)
## $x
## [1] 1
##
compiler::cmpfun(fun)(1)

Phabricator new review email behaviour change?
...morning
that my mailing rule (which previously simply marked new emails from
review at reviews.llvm.org with a specific tag) was no longer working for
them, and consequently, I missed several new review requests. (It wasn't an
issue for subsequent emails for the same review, for the record). I _think_
I've come up with a new rule for the current behaviour, but it was
concerning because I expect I'm not the only one who is in that boat.
Flagging it up in case it was an accident and/or so that people know of the
behaviour change.
Thanks,
James

Successes an failures with Samba 4.3.9 and FreeBSD-10.3
So... I've been running Samba 3.6 for too long and I upgraded. I did save
my packages for 3.6, but I don't _think_ I'm going back.
Points for the group:
- Samba 4.4.x is broken on FreeBSD. I forget exactly, but it seems to
be a known problem (tm), so I'll move on.
- Whether I use BIND9_DLZ or I use SAMBA_INTERNAL, samba_dnsupdate
complains. Strange thing, tho: all the domains seem to loo...

Shorewall and an inline IDS (snort-inline or hogwash)
Is anyone using an inline IDS like hogwash or snort-inline to drop
packets in a system running shoreline? I _think_ I see how to
configure it, but I''d be really interested in finding a howto or
something...
Thanks!

delivery queue, then perhaps the outbound queue (squeue?) can have a
worker thread that doesn''t migrate around. But in order for that to
happen, we have to stop having sending threads deliver right to the
driver driver when intervening queues are empty.
I _think_ this will work better for throughput. It may hurt latency
slightly though. I haven''t measured the latencies involved with queuing
as opposed to direct delivery through the driver''s xxx_send/xxx_start
routine, but I''d be curious to know if others here have.

[cfe-dev] clang in official apt repo built without z3 support
I _think_ there is a problem with the license as well: Z3 is MIT, so clang
would have to be released with Z3's license.

Indeed. I _think_ I understood correctly. I can't envision any _real_
problems. If I understand correctly, it'll be a matter of creating a
kernel module for the BSD platform, and making it loadable (kldload,
in BSD speak). Which will allow it to work with the resources made
available to the kernel (hardware)...

Waking up X
I just finished installing CentOS 5 (again)... and I'm having trouble
with my X config (I _think_).
If I 'startx' then switch to a console (using CTRL+ALT+F*) and then
back to X (CTRL+ALT+F7), 1/2 the time it comes back, the other half I
get a black screen and I can never recover the session.
X is still running (CTRL+ALT+Backspace kills it) but there seems to be
some type of power sav...
