What is the function of nmbd?
I've got Samba 2.2.2 installed and running fine on one of our servers (RS/6000 AIX 4.3.3 and using NT authentication), however, when I do Test #4 (from docs/textdocs/DIAGNOSIS.txt) it looks like this: npssrv{root}#nmblookup -B npssrv _SAMBA_ querying _SAMBA_ on 173.148.200.113 name_query failed to find name _SAMBA_ The test said I should get back the IP address of our samba server. I got the IP address back, but it also said name_query failed. Is this wrong? Also, on Test #5, it returns absolutely nothing (using client name OR the...

checking nmbd
Hello. I just recently upgraded to redhat 9 from 7 & everything went smoothly except samba. Using the DIAGNOSIS.txt I get to step 3 (I think) & execute the following command nmblookup -B servername _SAMBA_ the return is thus querying _SAMBA_ on 127.0.0.1 name_query failed to find name _SAMBA_ the text advises that nmbd is not installed correctly. Well I'm using xinetd & I created a separate script /etc/samba/runsamba that I point to from xinetd.conf. When I use netstat -a I see that...

Can copy to test share, but not read, move or delete
...and reinstalled via RMP the entire samba package, but I have the same issues. In short - 1 - I can copy files into the test shares, but then do nothing more with them. 2 - I can't access my home directory at all. 3 - I also find that in the testing processes, 'nmblookup -B _ _SAMBA_ _' returns unexpected results, but I can see file and smbd and nmbd seem to be running. It seems like I have some issue with my system security, but I don't know what or where to resolve that. I do have several different Samba users and they were built from my current unix users - the...

Samba + nmblookup
Hi Everyone, >From windows 2K, machine I could see Samba server but I can't get its share. I tried to follow the instruction given at http://samba.planetmirror.com/samba/ftp/docs/Samba24Hc13.pdf to resolve the problem. nmblookup -U 127.0.0.1 _SAMBA_ and nmblookup -B 10.10.255.255 real-samba-server-name fails for me but nmblookup -U 127.0.0.1 real-samba-server-name works for me. The Workgroup name is SYSTEM the samba server is daemon with IP 192.168.1.1 Where does the UNICAST_SUBNET come from? Why is a _SAMBA_ netbios name added where I've never configuered this? nmbd
I am having a lot of problems with nmbd. Basically it refuses to open its socket to listen on. I have checked, and the reason cannot be that the port is in use, as I can set any port with the -p switch, and I get the same error. The relevant part of the nmb log is: Netbios name list:- my_netbios_names[0]="DIRAC" lp_file_list_changed() file /usr/local/samba/lib/smb.conf ->

Read the Docs
...I have to figure out that you meant "d:" to be generic, in the same spirit as "servername." Maybe I should have recognized that a priori, but I didn't. Newbies make mistakes like that. In the Samba Checklist, Step 4, we're told to run "nmblookup - B BIGSERVER_SAMBA_." This seems to have two typos in it, yet as a newbie, I'm unsure. Using - B (with the space) just has nmblookup look for the IP address of the machine B, also, which, of course it cannot find. Or were we supposed to use "-B" -- without the space? But then to what broadca...

Windows 95
I am having a problem with some Windows 95 PC's . I had Samba 2.0.5 installed on a Sun system with Solaris 6, and a local network of PC's with W95 and W98, and everything was working fine. I then installed a new server with Solaris 8, and changed the IP addresses on the network, and the W98 PC was fine as was one of the W95 PC's, but 2 W95Pc's cannot see the Samba share, if I do

Samba -> WinXP: slow transfers, partial solution
..., 2.6.19 kernel, 100MBit/s network, and experience quite slow file transfers from Samba to WinXP SP2 clients: the speed is varying, but is about 1-2Mb/s at best. I spent quite some time investigating the issue, here are the intermediate results: 1) This happens only when transferring _from_ _Samba_ to _WinXP_. All other combinations are unaffected: a) Transferring from WinXP to Samba server is at 10Mb/s. b) Transfering to/from Samba server from Gentoo Linux on the same PC where WinXP is installed (so, completely the same hardware and connection) is also at normal speed. c) Trans...
