R 2.4 needed for packages in testing _now_?
Hi, I'm running testing, freshly updated, and I've now got a version of MASS installed that depends on R >=2.4. How long until 2.4 gets into testing, and is there anything I can do in the meantime to correct this? Cheers, Tyler

servers available _now_ .
Hello :-) I had a look at the servers that can stream Theora. I saw that ffmpeg was greatly appreciated. What's your opinion ? Is there any chance that IceCast can do it (What source would be used? Ices?) ? I really want to support Xiph products. I saw that page http://www.linuxmafia.com/faq/Apps/AV/video-streaming-servers.html but it's a bit old now, may be things have changed :-) Well,

row.names, rownames; colnames, no col.names?
There's a bit of a symmetry issue, which may or may not be important (led to 15 seconds of confusion until I got my bearings straight): row.names, rownames; colnames, no col.names? I _NOW_ realize the difference between row.names and rownames, but is there any reason not to have col.names for re-naming columns in a data.frame? (if there is, I don't particular need to know it, but it might make a nice FAQ). best, -tony -- A.J. Rossini Rsrch. Asst. Prof. of Biostatistics B...

Current state of theora & Windows port?
...ecently coded some small Linux Apps). Of course, all changes would be contributed back. 4. I understand that Theora is alpha-quality only, but because we basically bundle the player with the content and have great control about how the user uses the software I believe we could still get it to work _now_. Right or wrong? simple plot with magnified cex.axis & cex.label
....6 ) plot ( x, y, ylab = "Any title" ) I've got ugly picture, where 1) x-axis labels & x-axis itself overlapped, 2) y-axis title does not not fit within bounding box. The _same_ effect in "postscript" device. Is this a bug? Could I solve this problem any way _now_, if I _have_ to plot graph with strongly magnified axis labels? New PAM code landing (at last)
Hello all, The long-mooted PAM merge from FreeBSD is starting _now_. This replaces the PAM password auth kludge that we have used until now with a discrete challenge-response module. This module is invoked via keyboard-interactive for protocol 2 or TIS auth for protocol 1. Warning: this is a large change and will probably break things. It has only been tested with...

patch for kernel exploit?
Hi, As most of you probably already know, a local root exploit was released yesterday which affects kernels from 2.6.17 to 2.6.24.1. Is there an official patch for dom0 and domU kernels, or can the backport of the official kernel patch be used on these kernels? Well, I'm on the developers' side. They need to produce a product that _now_ gets installed in some embedded device and is expected to be still secure in 15 years and longer - as this thread proves. So the emphasis _must_ be on conservative defaults. But I've been on the other side as well 20 years ago, trying to run SSH on a 200MHz RISC machine... Engineering someti...

Large data sets and aggregation
I've noticed quite a few messages relating to large data sets bedeviling R users, and having just had to program my way through one that actually caused a "Bus error" when I tried to read it in, I'd like to ask two questions. 1) Are there any facilities for aggregation of data in R? ( I admit that this will not do much for the large data set problem immediately) 2) Is there any

Proposal for an alternative bugtracking workflow
Well, it's not really critical for us _now_, because we have not switched to github issues. And I can't really see any possibility of that happening in the short-term, either. Even once we do decide we want to move that way -- which we haven't yet even done -- it'll be a long road to making it happen, and I suspect there's m...

how does autofs deal with stuck NFS mounts and suspending to RAM?
...te file system? What happens when I put the client to sleep by suspending to RAM? Will autofs automatically unmount first, or will the server have to deal with a client that has apparently gone away and might re-appear later in unexpected ways? Is there a way to tell NFS to retry an operation _now_ after the connection went down and came back, rather than having to wait for a possibly rather long time? Is there a better alternative for mounting remote file systems over unreliable connections?
