Slow FIND_FIRST2 response
I'm running Samba 4.0.7 on CentOS 6.4 running double duty as DC and file
server.
OS X clients are taking a _long_ time to list long directories. One
directory with 10K entries is taking 3-4 minutes to display the entries in
Finder.
I captured a few seconds worth of packets and noticed that it's doing three
requests per file:
1. NTCreateAndX - just opens the file
2. Close
3. FIND_FIRST2 - to look for the r...

I've avoided MTA's like sendmail for a _long_ time. So I need help.
1. Is this the right list to try to resolve this? If not, which list?
2. postfix seems to considered much easier to configure than sendmail.
Do I install postfix? If so, will this work out of the box?
3. If sendmail, what's the magic configuration?

help diagnosing ftp problem
...a while. One
thing that bugs me is that I always get an error when make check-all where
it choked up running tests/internet.R. That wasn't a big deal, as I can run
install.packages()/update.packages() fine, and that's all I use the 'net
connection for. The problem is that it takes a _long_ time to fail
internet.R.
I dug in just a bit more this time (that I was sufficiently annoyed). The
problem is:
> read.table("ftp://ftp.stats.ox.ac.uk/pub/datasets/csb/ch11b.dat")
Error in file(file, "r") : unable to open connection
I tried running the line in an interacti...

Trying to configure xorcom on Suse 11
I'm having trouble getting a xorcom set up.
A large part of the problem is that the box is a _long_ way away and
I can't get to/at it easily, so while I could probably fix this in a few
hours if the machine were in front of me, I'm struggling over a slow
unreliable laggy link.
Ok, enough whining from me.
I have a new Xorcom plugged into the usb of a Suse 11 machine
I built Dahdi from...

ISTR an alt-backspace to restart X (been a _long_ time)? Of course with
the apparent conflicts in underlying script/config (tries to spawn
gettys on tty1-6 expecting X to start on tty7 but X starts on tty1) I
don't know if this would work any better.
My work around is a dummy user logged in on the first session (tty1) and
use System->Log-o...

How Auto Start Greeter on Ctrl-Alt-F8?
Ctrl-Alt-F7 automatically starts with a gdm greeter. I would like
Ctrl-Alt-F8 to be the same, but I cannot figure it out. Would you offer
some tips?
The purpose is to allow others to simply switch over and log into a
machine without bothering the current X session and/or leaving me logged
in the F8 so X is running and waiting for me.

not always making hard links?
...ve hunderds of links).
It's been running for some time now, and I found that while it's far
from done, it's already used 165GB on the receiving end. Investigation
shows that hardlinked files are no longer hardlinked...
Any ideas why?
Debugging may prove a bit problematic, as it takes a _long_ time to read
the list of files... However, I'm willing to try, if anyone has any
suggestions.
The receiving end is an rsync daemon, using the following rsyncd.conf:

kpartx can not detach
OS: EL6 - sometimes I use
kpartx -a /mnt/.../lvdisk.img
to map the partitions and mount them via
/dev/mapper/loop0pX
After using the disk (unmounting it) I noticed that
detaching such mapping via kpartx -d does not result
in freeing up the loop devices. Results: System reboots
shows that the filesystem where lvdisk.img is located
can't be unmounted.

OT (semi) E60 problem
Hello again gurus.
I have been using Asterisk with great results going on a couple of
years now.
My primary box is running asterisk 1.42 built from a tar ball on Mac
OSX 10.4.9.
I have a very odd issue that I cannot seem to nail down, which is
related to my Nokia E60 SIP phone.
I use the E60 with very good results (latest firmware) from several
locations.
Basically it works fine from

X100P + Call-Waiting - Flash how-to.
Hi all
I'm pretty sure someone must have done this before but I couldnt find any
trace of it on the web so I thought I would drop a note about how I ended up
doing it. I have also posted this info on voip-info.
Warning : This is not very elegant and I'm currently trying to write a patch
in order to make it better but so far, this the only way I've gotten this to
work.

Where is MASS
Dear List:
I have been using the MASS package until 5 minutes ago. I just updated
some packages from CRAN, something happened and R crashed. I then
started R again and tried to source in some code that calls MASS, but
received an error that there is not a package called MASS.
I then went to install packages from CRAN and MASS was not visible as an
option and I then went to the CRAN website and

Applying "toupper" to only portions of text strings

Assume that I have a vector containing some text strings, some of which contain a particular character. I could like to apply "toupper" to the text before the character. For example (in this case, "|" is the particular character):

samba blamed for network problems (help!)
Howdy folks:
Hi. It's me again. I've posted before about browsing problems, etc.
Here's the setup:
An isolated LAN (most clients have modems for dialling out) with
one linux/samba machine (RedHat 4.2, kernel 2.0.30, samba 1.9.18p8)
and ~20 win95 (OSR/2.1) clients. We used to have Netware 4.11
until the new PC/lan guy decided we didn't it any more (our old
server now runs

[RFT PATCH v2 00/12] drm: call drm_atomic_helper_shutdown() at the right times
This patch series came about after a _long_ discussion between me and
Maxime Ripard in response to a different patch I sent out [1]. As part
of that discussion, we realized that it would be good if DRM drivers
consistently called drm_atomic_helper_shutdown() properly at shutdown
and driver remove time as it's documented that they should...

Well, I'm on the developers' side.
They need to produce a product that _now_ gets installed in some
embedded device and is expected to be still secure in 15 years and

sshd and .bashrc
The short version: There's a "#define USE_PIPES"
in the middle of session.c; it would be better if
it were in (e.g.) defines.h or some other .h file.
(If in fact it needs to be defined at all; I'm not
convinced that it does.) Here's the (much) longer
version:
I recently installed the latest OpenSSH on some of
our servers (RHEL5, which provides the 4.3 release)

Need to test serial port connection
I recently bought a new UPS, and I''m attempting to use nut to monitor it.
Following setup instructions everything seemed to go well until it came to
testing the connection, which failed.
There is just one serial connector on the computer, so I set it to
monitor /dev/ttyS0. Either that is wrong, or communication is failing.
I''ve been told to try minicom to monitor it,
