I _believe_ ogg/vorbis can support multichannel sound. It also supports real spatial (3D, AC3 is only 2D) sound. Manually running dispatch.fcgi fails
I''m a newbie trying to setup lighttpd. It is failing with error 500. I tried running dispatch.fcgi by hand and I''m getting: # ./dispatch.fcgi /usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/activesupport-1.2.5/lib/active_support/dependencies.rb:200:in `const_missing'': uninitialized constant RailsFCGIHandler (NameError) from ./dispatch.fcgi:24 Not sure how to proceed from here.

Race condition in sshd
Hello, This bug exists in 5.0p1. I apologize that I couldn't test against HEAD. I _believe_ I have found a race condition in sshd. In the v2 protocol, after a connection, the accepting process forks in privsep_preauth(). The parent executes monitor_child_preauth() to allow certain privsep requests necessary for authentication. The unprivileged child runs do_ssh2_kex() followed by do_a...

windows / migration issues
Running latest rails, etc on windows xp. I can''t use "rake migrate" to migrate to latest version. I NEED to specify, i.e. "rake migrate VERSION=11" for things to work consistently. plain ''ol "rake migrate" never makes it to the latest version. no errors, she just stops short of the latest version. hasn''t been a problem until now --

Report of collision-generation with MD5
Just got a pointer to this via ACM "TechNews Alert" for today: http://www.acm.org/technews/articles/2004-6/0818w.html#item2 Seems that "... French computer scientist Antoine Joux reported on Aug. 12 his discovery of a flaw in the MD5 algorithm, which is often used with digital signatures...." There's more in the article cited above. Peace, david -- David H. Wolfskill

How to shutdown macOS / mac OSX from Network UPS Tools client - NUT
...ality of the former. Is that correct? So if I use a NOTIFYCMD, then I should implement the actual shutdown logic as well as the notification logic in that script, forgetting about SHUTDOWNCMD? > > I have never used a Synology box, but I vaguely remember them not using the NUT LB state. I _believe_ that Synology do use the low battery state – it’s certainly in the configuration files, and I have seen the low battery warning being sent to the iMac slave. Is there some way I can test my setup without having to deplete and recharge my UPS every iteration? I have tried: upsmon –c fsd...

uplink with multiple lines
I''ve been trying - without success - to aggregate the bandwidth of 3 DSL modems using the instructions in the HowTo (sections 4.2.1 and 4.2.2). I _believe_ I''m following the instructions to the letter, but when I add the last command (the "ip route" with "nexthop") then nothing goes out through the modems. Each modem works when I add a single default gateway pointing to it, so I don''t believe the modems are the p...

centos command to monitor a process for exit
Is there a command that will monitor a process for exiting (crash or normal exit) and then execute another command based on the said process no longer being active? Or is there a "wrapper" command that runs a process and when that process exists due to crashing or just exiting normally) that another process can be run. Thanks, Jerry

Trying to debug a WinXP - Win2000 ADSproblem..HELP!
...roblems with them. When I reformatted the units, I actually joined the samba boxes to the domain and set the security to "domain" I found these steps in an old version of Linux-Mag, if you need a link to that article, or something similar let me know and I will try to find it. Right now I _believe_ that with server security, you are telling the samba server to authenticate locally, where as domain tells the samba server to check the requestors credentials against a pdc/bdc. samba 2.2.8a, XP pro workgroup question.
Gang, This is my first post here so if I screw up please let me know. I run samba 2.2.8a on Solaris at home (UltraUX). I have several XP pro and win98 clients on this same network (192.168.1.x). I'm on a TCP/IP network and access my shares using the IP, not the UNC names. I use the same workgroup name on all of my hosts and use 'share' level security on the samba server and it is

Request for explanation on NFS re-export issue
I have a situation involving Samba that I _believe_ may be the fault of a buggy or old NFS daemon, but am not sure. I'm hoping someone can explain to me what is going on here (I have found a workaround). I have a Samba server on Fedora 7 (3.0.25b + whatever patches Fedora includes). This server exports a share called software which points to...

ssh-proxy, a new approach to firewall software
...essary initialization functions for the packet and the channel handling it is relatively straightforward to raise the limit to <undefined>. Rationale: The ssh proxy needs at least two of the encrypted connections, because it has to talk with a client and a server in the same time. Status: I _believe_ that this wasn't introduce a security hole, and possibly only minor bugs. I was modified every other line of the code in some sources, but the modifications were straightforward. I have tested it, and seems to work. Of course I cannot be sure that is the case. The really interesting one is...

[PATCH nbdkit 0/4] Reflection plugin, peer name.
...nt information back to the client. We have a few fun plugins like this (hello there, nbdkit-full-plugin) and normally I would push these without review, but in this particular case there's a specific danger that sending back data under control of the client might lead to a security problem. I _believe_ I have avoided that pitfall, but my belief isn't as good as having experts review it :-) The new feature is nbdkit_peer_name() which returns the sockaddr of the peer. It's essentially a wrapper around getpeername(2). This would allow several features to be implemented in future: - Plug...

[RFC] New attempt to a better "btrfs fi df"
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hi all, this is a new attempt to improve the output of the command "btrfs fi df". The previous attempt received a good reception. However there was no a general consensus about the wording. Moreover I still didn''t understand how btrfs was using the disks. A my first attempt was to develop a new command which shows how the disks
