[OT][Practices] The Case for RBAC/MAC

Boot Loop in efi
...here a "default" syslinux.cfg for efi that I could use as a template?

First, please _avoid_ top-posting.
I would suggest:
1_ Completely ignore the comment about some "linuxefi" command; it does _not_
exist in Syslinux.
2_ Change the /EFI/BOOT/syslinux.cfg file to:
DEFAULT linux
PROMPT 0
TIMEOUT 1
SAY Booting System...

emphasize: first test official binaries, not your own build.
If the official binaries fail, I would then suggest testing with the
binaries from Debian Sid.
Only as a last resort, try you own build. Please be aware that there
are some building issues ATM.
In any case, _avoid_ mixing binaries from different versions / builds
(e.g. c32 modules from one version with the installer from another;
that's a "no-no").
BTW, I would also suggest searching the official Syslinux wiki.

Ady.

Re: New Server Recommendation -- Hot-Swap SATA enclosure ...
...3U (3xHH) internal enclosure.
SATA was explicitly designed for hot-swap with fixed, SCA-like,
staggered, fixed-position connectors with _no_ extra interconnect
(i.e., like SCA SCSI drives, SATA drives _should_ connect _directly_
to the backplane, and the "can" is just a frame/handle), so
_avoid_ doing such with [P]ATA which is only asking for issues.
The EN-8721x02 will only set you back $150, so it's well worth it
(especially when you're already spending $300 for the Escalade
8506-4LP, it's only 50% more). It's also nice to have an "extra can"
for either holdin...

USB boot problems on Gigabyte GA-M55Plus-S3G
...gt;# sincerely hope it helps address Mr. Guilmette curiousity
Yes. Thank you.
It had not occurred to me that ye good olde BIOS is/was still there, and
that it could actually be relied upon to do useful things, you know, after
boot time. (So many OSes make it a point to get up and running and to
_avoid_, as much as possible, any & all use of BIOS I/O routines that it
is easy for forget that in limited contexts they are, nontheless, actually
still useful.)

10 year old question
Thank you for that. I?ve set up the thinstation-v5.6.1.iso in vm and setup the chroot. I did my first ./build ?allmodules and wrote the iso to usb using lili version 2.0 so that I can boot with older syslinux. I am doing this for the needed hardware profile to build from inside the vm however the usb has been stuck on the syslinux version line with a line following: Thinstation..... for 30 minutes

autofs handling of nis maps - Centos4
I have the following nis map (auto.facvs)
* -vers=3 &:/disk1
Which allows hosts that have /disk1 exported to be mounted to
/facvs/$hostname
It works fine, but on Centos4, it allows me to
cd /facvs/foo (where foo isn't a real host out there)
I find it has mounted my local /disk1 as /facvs/foo. It seems to be
ignoring the key in the map pertaining to the host if it's not a valid

Boot Loop in efi
Thanks for the hints - I have NOT CONFIG_EFI enabled - do I need this actually?
I do not know which variables I need to boot... The kernel APPEND parameters are
sufficient for me...
And the relocatable config is set already.
.. I enabled the EFI kernel config parts - no change... the console prints:
Booting System...
Loading linux... ok
Loading iramfs.gz...ok
[then reboot]
My syslinux.cfg is

problem with swap and upgrade to 4 from 3.3
Dear All,
I've tried to upgrade a Centos 3.3 installation to 4.0 using YUM and
some instructions I found in a thread on the Centos Forum.
The initial problem I had with Python 2.3/2.2 has been resolved, and now
I am trying to upgrade the kernel to 2.6 prior to the yum upgrade,
unfortunately it bails out at the end with dependancy erros on Xfree86.
At this point I decided to use the CDs

Beware - Yum 3.5 to 3.6 upgrade replaces named.conf
You get so used to yum upgrades going so smoothly but
I learned the hard way to always make a thorough
inspection after a yum update. I let yum go ahead and
upgrade from 3.5 to 3.6. Afterwards I made some basic
queries to httpd, postfix and bind named (probably a
cached query). I even checked the /var/named/
directory and saw all my hosts files.
So looked like another smooth ride, well until

I have a list of observations of individuals. I would like to make a
list of individuals, with a data frame of observations for each individual.
The following code usually works, but not always

# Make a list of empty data frames

indivs = levels(Z$individual_id)

extlinux - Failed to load ldlinux.c32
Hello there
I built development version of syslinux from git 6.04-pre3-3-(sometag)
and I am trying to boot a slackware-current system with it. I do not
use a separated partition for `/boot`. It's just `/dev/sda1` here for
`/` and `/boot` is just a folder. I simply use `mbr.bin` against a DOS
partition table and the first partition having the bootable flag.
With this layout, the only

DVD writer problem
I have an NEC DVD-RW ND2500A (that's not the label I bought it under,
but that's what it really is.) It's supposed to read/write CDs, DVDs,
DVD+Rs, and DVD-Rs. I'm basically dual booting between XP and CentOS 4.
Following the recipe in "The Linux Cookbook", I tried to copy a DVD using:
dd if=/dev/hdd of=/tmp/diskfile.iso
then
cdrecord dev=/dev/hdd fs=32m

CentOS on Compaq Proliant Rackmount Servers
Greetings,
Can anyone relate experience(s) installing CentOS on Compaq rack mount
servers units please?
Easy no problem, easy some issues, or ghastly do not do it under any
circumstances... ;)
Basically, I'm looking at some used/refurb dual PIII units and will run RAID
on Compaq built in SCSI or is it easy to pop in some 3ware SATA in them?
Let me know in terms of CentOS 3 and/or 4 please.
