3Ware 9690SA
I successfully installed CentOS on 3ware 9650SE controller. Due to some issues with compatibility with my motherboard, I replaced it with a 9690SA. Now the system won't boot (although interestingly enough, it find the boot menu fine, just won't boot past a certain point in the bootup phase. I thought I would reinstall, but anaconda doesn't find the raid array. 3ware does have drivers on their site, but I'm not too sure h...

measuring iops on linux - numbers make sense?
...n the different components of the system, we have a few such servers). A couple of hosting providers told us that this (iostat and collectd "merged operations per second") is a not so bad way to get IOPS. A partner of ours doubts that this is possible with the current hardware - a 3ware 9690SA-4I4E (http://www.3ware.com/products/sas-9690SA.asp) with 512Mb battery backed up cache and 8 SAS 15k rpm disks (SEAGATE ST3300656SS) in RAID 1+0. They calculate 750 IOPS per spindle and say that the maximum they ever saw from any 15k disk was 350 iops on RAID 0. Am I measuring the numbers correctl...

Xen fails with garbled boot screen - incompatible hardware?
...n working fine. At the weekend I went into the office to install Xen on our server but I had a major problem. The server is a home-build with a Tyan s5211 motherboard with an Intel i3210w chipset CentOS 5.4 64bit installed and rebooted several times without any issues. This server also has a 3Ware 9690SA-8i RAID card in it as well which has never caused any problems. Ubuntu 8.04 has been running on this machine for the last 18 months or so without any problems. I did a fresh install of CentOS 5.4 64bit then installed Xen using the basic "yum install kernel-xen xen" method and made the ch...

New Dovecot server buildout review
Hello Everyone, I have the opportunity to do a new mail system build out for about 20k email boxes over a few hundred domains. I already run a system like this, but this time I can do it right :). My thought on storage is to have a 12 drive JBOD system attached via SAS to a 3ware 9690SA raid controller. Drives would be RAID'd (10 or 5) to appear as one for message storage. Dovecot would run on that box and deliver directly from postfix. POP and IMAP connections would come in directly (no proxy). Postfix head boxes in front of this do anti-virus and spamassassin, so this box wo...

CentOS 5.4 64bit default Xen install won''t start, garbled boot screen
...s a home-build with a Tyan s5211 motherboard with an Intel i3210w chipset CentOS 5.4 64bit installed and rebooted several times without any issues. So I installed Xen using the basic "yum install kernel-xen xen" and made the changes to grub to try booting Xen. This server also has a 3Ware 9690SA-8i RAID card in it as well. I also tried with the latest stable Xen from the gitco.de repositories (3.4.1) but that gave me the same problem so I reverted to the default CentOS Xen version. It started off fine but just after the section of the boot "waiting for driver initialization" the...
