Slightly OT: 3ware cards
Slightly OT, but this looks like a good place to find a lot of disk
controller experience. Since I need to swap out some dodgy hardware anyway,
I am thinking about upgrading to one of the 4 port 3ware IDE RAID cards. It
will only be in a 2 disk mirror config, however, I am hoping that it will
give a nice speed boost
Any thoughts on compatibility with dual cpu machines? Any one have any

Any quiet 24 port POE switches out there?
I have an upcoming install which places the switch close to some
employees in a quiet work environment. Can anyone recommend a quiet 24
port POE switch? The Linksys SRW224P behind me right now would be
objectionable, I'm sure.

SATA vs. SAS
I have 8 WD SATA HDD with raid ready (3mbps) hard disks on a 8 port 3ware
controller.(on raid 5.) Does anyone have a comparison on SATA raid and SAS
raid disk. As you know SAS disk are very expensive and I would like to know
from experts in the list who could suggest which of the following would be
the best.
Option 1) 2 servers each having 2.0TB raid disk with SAS drives, 2GB ram and

ZFS ZIL + L2ARC SSD Setup
...I''m trying to build an OpenSolaris iSCSI SAN out of a whitebox system,
which is intended to be used as a backup SAN during storage migration,
so it''s built on a tight budget.
The system currently has 4GB RAM, 3GHz Core2-Quad and 8x 500GB WD REII
SATA HDDs attached to an Areca 8port ARC-1220 controller configured as
RAID10.
For ZIL and rpool I''m planning on ordering 2x 16GB Mtron server grade
SLC SSDs (Pro 7500 Series) and attach them to a 2port Areca ARC-1200
SATA RAID controller with BBU as a mirror.
The reason for using a RAID controller here, is so the batter...

Recommendation for home NAS external JBOD
Hi,
my oi151 based home NAS is approaching a frightening "drive space" level. Right now the data volume is a 4*1TB Raid-Z1, 3 1/2" local disks individually connected to an 8 port LSI 6Gbit controller.
So I can either exchange the disks one by one with autoexpand, use 2-4 TB disks and be happy. This was my original approach. However I am totally unclear about the 512b vs 4Kb issue.
