Re: New Server Recommendation -- Hot-Swap SATA enclosure ...
[ Yes, SP^M'n the list with follow-ups to myself ;-] From: Bryan J. Smith > If you are building a new system with such storage requirements, > I would really push you towards a 3Ware Escalade 8006-2 or 8506-4. When cost is supreme, then just a Escalade 7006-2 or 8006-2 with (2) [P]ATA or [S]ATA drives is what you want. It only adds ~$125 to system cost. When you want to minimize cost, but also minimize troubles, I recommend an Escalade 8506-4LP with an EN-8721A02 (Beige) or EN-8721B02 (Black) 5.25&...

Fighting some install issues with a new box
...4.x as its underlying OS). The machine has 2 Opteron 250DP (2.4GHz) with 4 GB of RAM. It is using a Tyan Thunder K8WE (S2895A2NRF) motherboard with an nVidia nForce chipset -- http://www.tyan.com/products/html/thunderk8we.html. It is configured to boot from an SATA drive (80GB) and then use 3Ware 8506-8 card with 8x250GB SATA drives in a big raid 5 as a data store. So, CentOS appears to recognize the nics and find the boot drive well enough to go through a complete install. Now this is where things get "interesting" .. the install process hung for a very long period of time during the...

Re: Hardware RAID Controller -- not a "bug"
...n <jlb17 at duke.edu> > I'm in the midst of testing a dual 9500-12 based system, and I've got all > sorts of results (I posted tiobench numbers for XFS and ext3 recently). Until the Escalade 9500S series matures, I've been recommending the following: 3Ware Escalade 7506/8506 for RAID-10. 3Ware Escalade 7506/8506 for RAID-5 when it is largely a read-only setup. LSI Logic MegaRAID SATA 300-8X (XScale) for RAID-5. Unless you absolutely need the maximum disk efficiency of RAID-5, or you have 99% reads (e.g., typical MySQL Internet server), then RAID-10 is often far better...

...drive, an 80G SATA and a > 250G SATA for everything else. One thing I want to be sure of is that > I don't run out of space for the mail spools in /var/spool/mail. If you are building a new system with such storage requirements, I would really push you towards a 3Ware Escalade 8006-2 or 8506-4. Have you already purchased the hard drives? If so, then merely buy a 2nd 80GB SATA and 2nd 250GB SATA with a 8506-4 and use RAID-1 for each. If not, then just buy a cheaper 8006-2 and use RAID-1 with (2) 300GB disks (you might consider this even if you already have some drives). > Does any...

Converting to Rails 2.0.2
...oad_missing_constant'' from /Users/sxross/rails/tastie_work/vendor/rails/activerecord/ lib/../../activesupport/lib/active_support/dependencies.rb:453:in `const_missing'' The project uses trunk versions of rspec and rspec_on_rails, along with current Rails edge (at this point, 8506). After upgrading Rails and some of the normal monkeying around, I did a script/generate rspec (nothing of note there and replaced all just to be sure). Then: rake spec does this: Users/sxross/rails/tastie_work/vendor/rails/activerecord/lib/../../ activesupport/lib/active_support/dependencie...

Serial ATA hardware raid.
Hi everyone, I'm looking into setting up a SATA hardware raid, probably 5 to use with CentOS 4. I chose hardware raid over software mostly because I like the fact that the raid is transparent to the OS. Does anyone know of any SATA controllers that are well tested for this sort of usage? From what I can tell from googling, this is more or less where RHEL stands: Red Hat Enterprise Linux

[Hardware] Good Server I/O on-the-cheap: ASL Monarch 811x with CentOS 4.2 ...
...ackmount: http://www.aslab.com/products/storage/monarch8114.html They seem to be supporting the latest 3Ware Escalade 9550SX, which it too new to trust IMHO. But if they feel differently, I'd trust them. At the same time, it wouldn't surprise me if they'd sell it with a Escalade 8506 series instead -- which I do trust (especially since with only 4 drives, I'd probably create a RAID-10 volume), and only default to the 9550SX because most customers want RAID-5. -- Bryan J. Hardware RAID Controller
Hi Everyone, Has anyone had any experience of using the Promise FastTrak SX4000 or SuperTrak SX6000 IDE RAID Controllers under Centos (if it matters I'm using version 4). I've seen it listed on linuxcompatible.org as working but would prefer to find out any first-hand experince before I buy. I'm looking to build a new mini server based on Mini-ITX and have found a great 1U case

Blank Voicemail.Conf after Password Change
Hi, For a few weeks now, our asterisk server has been experiencing something very odd. From time to time, voicemail.conf would go blank. We finally tracked it down to happening when someone attempts to change their password. It seems the file is touched, but not written to, and we're left with a blank voicemail file. Permissions seem to be fine: -rw-rw-r-- 1 asterisk asterisk 12707

Opteron Mobo Suggestions
I've been planning to build a dual Opteron server for awhile. I'd like to get people's suggestions on a suitable motherboard. I've looked at the Tyan K8SE (S2892) and K8SRE (S2891) but would like to find more Linux-specific experiences with these boards. Some features I expect are at least 4 SATA (SATA-300?) ports, serial console support in the BIOS, USB 2.0 and IEEE-1394

difference in rbind() [print?] behavior between 2.2.1 and 2.3.0
I'm a little confused by a change in behavior from 2.2.1 to 2.3.0. In 2.2.1 I could do > ## Create a list of data frames in 2.2.1 > b <- list(x = data.frame(a = 1, b = 2), y = data.frame(a = 1, b = 2)) > do.call("rbind", b) a b x 1 2 y 1 2 But in 2.3.0 I get > do.call("rbind", b) Error in data.frame(a = c("1", "1"), b =

More info on 3Ware 9550SX from the field (in case anyone else is interested)
From a buddy of mine that has spent a little time with the new cards. This was in response to my email asking about his impressions of them: It just came out in mid-September. There are a couple reasons I'm not thrilled with it: 1) no 8-port multilane version (only 12) 2) the 8-port non-multilane version is a kludge, connector-wise (a row of 3 double-stacked connectors along the

do.call in 2.3.0 vers 2.3.x
Dear R-Core, after switching to 2.3.0, all my trusted do.call constructs that worked in 2.2 and earlier fail. I noted that changes were introduced to do.call, but I could not find out how these relate to my problem. The following example works in 2.2 and earlier, but fails because rownames are partially NA. I can correct this by manually adding row names, but it's a bit of work to check this
