filter policy drop and allow transparent proxy
...? It seems a
bit strange as from reading several articles on it I thought the
following occurs.
1st line - if it doest match it gets dropped on the local filter input.
2nd line - redirects the traffic off the link layer into the network
layer ready for line 3.
3rd line - redirects the port 80 to 8080 and then goes to the local
process (squid) through the input filter
4th line - input filter accepts the traffic over riding the global
reject policy.
iptables -P INPUT DROP
ebtables -t broute -A BROUTING -p IPv4 --ip-protocol 6
--ip-destination-port 80 -j redirect --redirect-target ACCEPT

R won't connect to the internet on Linux!
OK, I really am struggling with this one! Forgive me if I am being stupid....
I am running R 1.7.1 on Suse Linux 8.1. I connect to the internet through a proxy so I have:
IAHC-LINUX03:~ # echo $http_proxy
wwwcache.bbsrc.ac.uk:8080
IAHC-LINUX03:~ # echo $HTTP_PROXY
wwwcache.bbsrc.ac.uk:8080
just in case ;-)
SO, i go into R and I get:

unable to connect to 'www.bioconductor.org' on port 80.

...e system. Puppet dashboard is working great but
after "successfully" installing puppetdb following puppet''s opensource
instructions the puppetdb dashboard just doesn''t seem to exist (according
to some sites I should be able to get to it by going to

only available in the enterprise version or does it exist in the opensource
version as well?
Is anyone successfully using puppetdb with the puppet dashboard? How do
they relate to one and other since they both seem to operate off different

Remapping port below 1024 on the firewall
...d to achieve the same or
better using just shorewall.
I accept this is generally not a good idea on a firewall, but a general
solution would be useful on other kinds of linux host that can run
shorewall. A simple example would be to run a web server under a safe
user account, listening on port 8080, but allowing clients to access the
web server via port 80.
My situation is unconventional, but very similar to the general case. I
have a rogue web client (not sure if it is buggy software or malware)
that occasionally tries to connect to my firewall''s snat external ip
address on por...

here the problem description again:
I have Jetty running as user "nobody" at the port 8080.
I need to redirect incoming HTTP requests to port 80 to the above port.
(So I don't think I have ports backwards).
