Long filenames and 8.3 conversion
Hello List,
Can anyone please help explain how Samba handles long
filename conversion to DOS 8.3 tilde format?
I have a client with a Windows app that works great when using
8.3 type filenames. When an attempt to use long filenames is
made, the files are created great and the data is there. But
when the app builds the index and attempt to retrieve the data
file is made, the wrong file is

Limit dirs/filenames to old 8.3 DOS convention
Hello all,
after endless searching for days you might be able to help.
In short: Is there a way to get Samba accept only 8.3 filenames and directory names on a share?
The problem: From a windows client a user should be able to save files on a destination (samba share) which aren't longer than the old 8.3 dos convention.
This is a requirement for a system behind it, which can only deal

Linux installation problem
Hello everyone,
I downloaded the latest Linux version of R and tried installing it, but
during the installation process I found that this version of R requires tcl
8.3 and tk 8.3. The problem is that I've been unable to find Linux
versions of tcl 8.3 and tk 8.3. The only Linux versions of tcl/tk I've
been able to find are 8.4. Has anybody been successful in getting R to
install on

8.2 ->8.3 regression on disk writes
Hello,
using 8.2 the machine runs fine,
using 8.3 or higher, not so much.
In laymans terms,
if I do "too many" writes/time just once, the machine can't do any disk
access for a couple of hours.
As in: What's already running stays running, no crashes or anything,
but as soon as I need to read from disk (login, start program not cached
in memory from previous run),
I'm

Going from -STABLE to -RELEASE with freebsd-update support?
I have an old server box that I've traditionally updated from source.
I'd like to switch over to -RELEASE and use freebsd-update in the
future. What's the easiest way to achieve that?
Will just untarring the relevantrelease distro files work?

how to time out a query
Hi,
I''ve got an activerecord query which takes longer than 100 seconds. I''m
using rails 2.2 with postgresql 8.3.
http://www.postgresql.org/docs/8.3/static/runtime-config-client.html
mentions an option called "statement_timeout" which when set aborts a
query which takes longer than x milli seconds.
How do I pass this option to AR so that it in turn passes this to

GEOM_PART: integrity check failed (mirror/gm0, MBR) on FreeBSD 8.3-RELEASE
I just did a source upgrade from 8.2 to 8.3. System boots but has this
warning:
GEOM_PART: integrity check failed (mirror/gm0, MBR)
Google points to issues with FreeBSD 9 and the need to migrate to GPT
but I wasn't expecting this with 8.3!
Are there any quick fixes to eliminate this warning or is it safe to
ignore please?

FreeBSD 8.3-R sysinstall does not "see" disks that are recognized during boot
I've got a new supermicro server I'm trying to get FreeBSD on. It uses the
Intel c602 chipset, and it's my understanding that support for that
chipset (c60X) was recently added via the isci driver. Ok, great, that
explains why 8.2-R and 9.0-R didn't see the drives.
So, I grabbed the memstick image of 8.3-RELEASE that is on the ftp server,
booted it up, and sure enough, as the

Installing R on Red Hat Linux, Tcl/Tk
Hi,
I've been trying to install R on Red Hat Linux 9 for some
potential users of my R/TclTk application. I tried using the
rpm for R 1.7.1 for Red Hat Linux 9. It told me that I needed:
libtcl8.3.so
so I looked for a binary release of Tcl 8.3.x on
http://www.tcl.tk/software/tcltk/8.3.html
but found that the link to the Tcl 8.3.x binaries pointed to
ActiveTcl 8.4.x . I couldn't see

system2() shortens R.home() to 8.3 form on windows
Hi,
So in an interactive R session, R.home() returns the following:
> R.home()
[1] "D:/biocbld/bbs-3.2-bioc/R"
However, if I call it from system2(), I get different results:
> system2("R", "-q -e R.home()")
> R.home()
[1] "D:/biocbld/BBS-3~1.2-B/R"
Similarly:
> system2("R", "-q -e Sys.getenv('R_HOME')")

Executing non-8.3 named files
Hi,
I've got an AIX 4.2.1 server running Samba 2.0. I am having a little problem with executable files.
Seems that if I try to execute (on an NT client, at least) a file whose path or filename is non in 8.3 format, I get wierd "can't
find xxxx.exe or a component" messages.
For example, one file we have on the AIX filesystem, /qa/images is

Can't get 8.3 filenames to lower the case
Hi,
I seem to have some trouble on default lowering the case on 8.3
filenames. I use the following settings but sometimes I still get a
8.3-compliant file with uppercased chars in my unix filesystem.
default case = lower
case sensitive = no
preserve case = yes
short preserve case = no
mangle case = no
mangling method = hash2
Any thoughts?
