Netapp like snapshots using Centos 5/6 direct attached storage
Hello,
I'm researching the best method of providing about 20 users in a production environment the same functionality as they would have on a Netapp NFS share.
The O/S I will be using is CentOS 5 or 6 (max flex on which one) and the hardware is a disk array directly (12 SAS disks 7TB un-configured brand new) attached to a HP 580 G 7.
I've done some reading on ZFS on Linux ,fuse-ZFS, BRTFS ,rsnapshot, snapFS.
Any one have some advice or experiences to share?
Thanks,
spuds

Any Known Share limitations or performance issues with large file systems
All,
I am running samba-3.0.28-1.el5_2.1.x86_64.rpm on RHEL 5 x64. I am sharing out approximately 7TB via samba and a 'few' of my users are complaining of latency when accessing their shares via Windows Explorer. Mind you the disk is about 93% full which I am sure is a factor but before I go into battle I wanted to make sure there were no known limitations or issues.
Thanks in advance

meta bug: info on "why" xfer seems no longer available? (3.1.0)
I just copied a file system using
xfsdump|xfsrestore
At least 1 new directory had been created on the source during the
xfer (took 9+hours -- 7TB), so I wanted to verify I hadn't missed anything.
Using rsync:
> rsync --version
rsync version 3.1.0 protocol version 31
Capabilities:
64-bit files, 64-bit inums, 64-bit timestamps, 64-bit long ints,
socketpairs, hardlinks, symlinks, IPv6, batchfiles, inplace,
append, ACLs,...

samba server file read size limit of 64MB for HDF files
Sorry if that's a vague subject, but this problem is a little weird and I'm just wondering if there are any suggestions out there.
We've got a Samba server (3.0.23) running on a CentOS 5.3 server offering up a data share of 7TB on an XFS filesystem. The authentication all happens through a Samba PDC with an LDAP backend all on a different server. The system in question is just a domain member fileserver.
On the data share are several HDF files that we try to read into a couple of different applications on XP. I'm usi...

Samba AD valid users issue

integrated into a large Active Directory network there are
5 primary AD servers and a large number of local AD server

domains hundreds of groups and thousands of users. It has

C7, and my RAID
Ok, I think my only choice at this point is to delete and recreate the
RAID, then restore from backup (oy, 7TB).
I see that I can do an mdadm --remove /dev/md0, then, the page I see that
on, suggests zeroing the superblocks. What would happen if I *don't* zero
the superblocks before doing an mdadm --create? Would I just wind up back
where I am?

CentOS 4 and multi TB storage solutions
...mages. The data grows by 2TB every year.
This has been working so far but this current implementation is facing
growing pains so I'm looking at more scalable options. Something that
will offer 12TB of storage and room to grow by adding more storage as
needed.
Currently the Apple Xserve RAID 7TB offerings connected to a QLogic
SANbox 5200 fibre switch looks very appealing. Especially considering
the Xserve RAIDs are listed in Red Hat's RHEL HCL and Google searches
have revealed successful RHEL & Xserve implementations .
But since this is still preliminary research having more opt...

Problem to create directories
Hi all,
I have a problem with samba : I can create files, but can't create directories.
The server has many shares, on seperated disks.
We consider two of them : one 2Tb share and one share with more than 7Tb.
Samba configuration is good, and works on many other servers, and on this one except for the large share. Permissions are correctly setted up too.
I can read/write files and directories on the first one, on the 2Tb one.
I can read/write files, and read directories on the large one, but can't...

samba 3.0.23d with ldap compile problem
Hi,
I'm trying to compile samba 3.0.23d for use with ldap as backend.
The system is Debian Sarge fresh installed, all updates installed, and
openldap-2.3.27 installed from sources.
I searched a lot but couldn't google out anythink that helped.
I sent this same mail jesterday with configure options for ldap, ld.so.conf
and samba error.log but it was too long. So another time with less

Poor performance on NFS-exported ZFS volumes
I''m seeing some pretty pitiful performance using ZFS on a NFS server, with a ZFS volume exported (only with rw=host.foo.com,root=host.foo.com opts) and mounted on a Linux host running kernel 2.4.31. This linux kernel I''m working with is limited in that I can only do NFSv2 mounts... irregardless of that aspect, I''m sure something''s amiss.
I mounted the zfs-based
