rsync many small files
At our lab we have storage with many small files. For example a
directory can contain over 15,000 files and each file averages about
75k. I would like to sync this to another filesystem on a different
server but I am not sure if there is a rsync tuning flag I can use for
such a intensive job. I am using rsync 3.0.3. Also, I would like to
use little memory as possible.
Any thoughts? TIA

[LLVMdev] Why is CLANG++ so freaking slow -- with example.

This is a preprocessed version of a file from from the VV image viewer
package. I stripped out all the lines beginning in '#' and multiple
empty lines.
It's about 75k lines of code.
On a Mac Pro, the unix 'time' command says it's using 249 seconds of
user time. Wall time on my machine somewhere around 5 minutes?

glusterfs and samba (file-max limit reached)
...l a point. Unexpectedly on heavy
usage the nodes happen to reach the max file descriptors opened limit
really easily.
Anybody else has experience on it? Is that kind of usage supported.
currently one node seems to have surpassed about 3M open files even if
the samba server claims to have about 75k files currently opened.
I'm using a recent gluster snapshot from git.

cache memory not being used
Since I upgraded to 4.2 it looks like the cache memory doesn't go over
about 70K or so. I have over 700K free and it started using swap,
which doesn't normally happen for a few days or so. Any hints on what
might be up?
This is just after a compile and the cached is only 75k

Slow network to samba machine

error messages usually like : "The device does not exist on the network...."
Smaller files of say 1-3k transfer without problems in reasonable amounts of
time.
The same problems occur when I map a drive from win98 to mail - except that
I can transfer slightly larger files (up to 75k) without the error/failure
messages. It still takes about 5mins to transfer the file.
Same goes when I use /usr/bin/smbclient \\\\win98name\c password - although
I can 'get' a file up to about 140k without any error messages.
I have tried the smb.conf with SO_RCVBUF to 32768, security us...

OT: Replacing Venerable NAS
...r 8+ years. Except for replacing its
power supply, it has not skipped a beat in all this time.
I use it primarily as a backup device (via NFS) for a couple of Linux
machines, (via SMB) for a couple of Windows PC's, and (via ftp) for web
sites at my hosting provider.
SMART+ reporting shows ~75K hours operation, with zero sectors
reallocated, on each of the four disks.
I'm thinking I should be looking for a replacement, even with all this
good info/luck.
Would like to hear recommendations here. Besides the ReadyNAS, I have
worked with a Thecus NAS (don't recall model). What a...

Job Queue
After some initial stumblings, I think I''ve got the hang of
backgroundrb. It''s great! I''d been thinking for many many months how
cool something like this would be!
I''m trying to make a "job queue". That is, a pool of worker threads
monitor a queue. When a job appears, one of the workers grabs it and
executes the task. When complete, the worker

[RFC] Lanai backend

And SystemZ is hopefully a good comparison in that is a new and well
isolated backend. Ever since it went in I can remember only ever
discussing 1 or 2 patches, and the last case pushed me to improving
common code (r2...

dos?
I have an old dos app that doesn't run in the win95 shell very well.
There are problems with the graphics.
Is it possible to connect to a samba server from real dos? I assume the
answer is no but I thought I would check.

[Bug 79820] New: Strange readout on fan1_input when pwm1_min < 33
...ut for my card. Since the
fan runs at ~1k RPM in idle when running the NVIDIA blob, I tried lowering
pwm1_min and noticed odd results.
Lowering pwm1_min to 32 is fine and gives me a readout of ~1.8k RPM. However,
after that, I see weird output values:
31 ~ 4.5k
30 ~ 9k
29 ~ 5k
28 ~ 22k (sic)
27 ~ 75k (sic)
26 ~ 400k (sic)
At no time was my computer lifting up from the ground though, and even with the
reported 4.5k it seems that the fan did not actually speed up.
Additional background: It seems my fan is only supported as of Linux 3.15.0.
Before that, the fan ran at 100% and dmesg showed ?FAN...

[RFC] Lanai backend
You've raised an important point here Pete, and while I disagree pretty
strongly with it (regardless of whether Lanai makes sense or not), I'm glad
that you've surfaced it where we can clearly look at the issue.
The idea of "it really should have users outside of just the people who
have access to the HW" I think is deeply problematic for the project as a
whole. Where does
