Identifying special characters in a text file

I discovered that the following works:

Applying "toupper" to only portions of text strings

Finding the common portion of strings

accessing windows files systems from unix side

Environment variable PATH in Windows

Use of apply rather than a loop

speeding read.table
...ugh about using "comment.char" as a means of avoiding reading the problematic lines. However, comment.char does not accept ="[A-Z]"

grep triggering error on unicode character
