Guidance on step() with large dataset (750K) solicited...
Hi. Background - I am working with a dataset involving around 750K observations, where many of the variables (8/11) are unordered factors. The typical model used to model this relationship in the literature has been a simple linear additive model, but this is rejected out of hand by the data. I was asked to model this via kernel methods, but first wanted to play...

ext3 usage guidance
...document anywhere offering guidance on the optimum use of ext3 filesystems? Googling shows nothing useful and the Linux ext3 FAQ is not very forthcoming. I'm particularly interested in: 1. The effect on performance of large numbers of (generally) small files One of my ext3 filesystems has 750K files on a 36GB disk, and backup with tar takes forever. Even 'find /fs -type f -ls' to establish ownership of the various files takes some hours. Are there thresholds for #files-per-directory or #total-files-per-filesystem beyond which performance degrades rapidly? 2. I have...

Regarding slow transfer speeds with Samba --> Windows and FA311
I recently ran into significant problems with a network configuration in which transfers from the samba linux box to a windows box was taking a unreasonbly large amount of time. Transfer speeds looked like 5k/sec vs ftp with the same file/machine setup, 750k/sec. I found a solution to my problem. My problem I think was something the duplex mode whether it was incorrectly configured in the driver and/or swith router I'm not sure. My solution was to not use the fa311.o module available from netgear's website but instead use the natsemi driver l...

Success
Do in part because of advice offered here, we were able to incorporate the an ogg-vorbis decoder into our software. The encode stays with another piece, and this has kept software size down considerably. I was wondering why the encoding was so large? And for my own benefit, are there some books I could study to learn the mathematical background (or anything else I would need to completely

Installing the Zoo Library.
Hi Ya'll I'm trying to install the zoo library... I've downloaded about 5 or 6 of their releases (inc. the latest one), all of them giving me the same syntax error when trying to install... Anyone seen this problem before? its not the "lib" argument that is the problem (ive been installing other packages using this exact format with no problem... just zoo is the problem.

concurrent IMAP connections (plus 2 easy questions)
...er benchmarking to ensure that we could properly plan our server configuration requirements as we continue to roll this out, so I thought I would share this, partly to see if anyone has experiences that conflict with my findings. I found that each incremental dovecot IMAP process required about 750k of RAM. Simulations confirmed that 8 gig of RAM was sufficient to support approximately 10,000 concurrent IMAP connections (no POP3). CentOS settings: Added: fs/inotify/max_user_instances = 28000 to: /etc/sysctl.d/99-sysctl.conf Added: * hard nproc 28000 *...

doesn't that make you wonder?
...until lately -- have been severely limited, in that they don't accept much text. although i wouldn't expect that it would be "difficult" to mount one of the converter-scripts so that it would handle large files (where, by "large", i mean a text-file in the range of 250k-750k, which is the amount of disk-space required by a "typical" book), as far as i know (please correct me if i'm wrong), _no_one_has_. so i was pleasantly surprised to see that your site took a big file. (the browser gave the "this script is taking a long time" message, but i c...
