Some 3Ware questions
...ds. Thanks to the informative
message Byron, I realize the deficiencies of doing RAID 1 this way,
especially now that the builtin is out of date with Kernel used by Centos.
I have 4 ATA drives that were configured in two pairs. I assume that I
need a 3Wave controller that has 4 ports like the 7506-4LP...correct?
Do I need to install any software during the installation of Centos?

Software Raid 6
How slow and how reliable is software raid 6 on CentOS 5. The system I'm
going to use is A socket 939 dual core Athlon, 4 gigs of ram and a 3ware
7506-8 controller. Its mostly going to be used for storage (Movies, MP3s
etc.). Thanks.

Until the Escalade 9500S series matures, I've been recommending the following:
3Ware Escalade 7506/8506 for RAID-10.
3Ware Escalade 7506/8506 for RAID-5 when it is largely a read-only setup.
LSI Logic MegaRAID SATA 300-8X (XScale) for RAID-5.
Unless you absolutely need the maximum disk efficiency of RAID-5, or
you have 99% reads (e.g., typical MySQL Internet server), then RAID-10
is often far b...

Centos 5.6 3ware raid 5
Hi, I've seen comments about the poor performance of these cards with
raid 5 configs. I have an old card with 3 x 500G IDE drives connected in
raid 5 and I'm getting around 10mb/s write performance. :-(
I'm seeing high iowait figures at times and associated very high cpu
load average figures, probably because, under load, everything is
stacked up waiting for the disks to actually

Replacement for Intel SDS2 Motherboard
Alle,
We have recently had one of our office servers go south. The hardware
was an Intel SDS2 motherboard (EATX), Dual Intel PIII 1.4GHz FC-PGA2-L2
512KB, 3GB (6x512MB) 168 pin DIMM, SDRAM 133MHz/PC-133-ECC with 1x3Ware
7006-2 and 2x3Ware 7506-4LP RAID controllers. The OS was RHEL3.
Apparently, according to the beep codes, there has been an FRB failure.
I've migrated most of the services
(mail, web, proxy, samba, mysql, mailman, home directories) to an interim box
running CentOS 5.2.
At a minimum, I need to replace the motherboard and...

Has anyone seen this issue? We're running containers under CentOS 7.2
and some of these containers are reporting incorrect memory allocation
in /proc/meminfo. The output below comes from a system with 32G of

Hardware RAID Controller
Hi Everyone,
Has anyone had any experience of using the Promise FastTrak SX4000 or
SuperTrak SX6000 IDE RAID Controllers under Centos (if it matters I'm
using version 4). I've seen it listed on linuxcompatible.org as working
but would prefer to find out any first-hand experince before I buy.
I'm looking to build a new mini server based on Mini-ITX and have found
a great 1U case

High load average and client timeouts

want the best system to win. I just can't believe that a Linux/Samba
system is unable to out-perform a runty Windows box.
One nagging question is what would the "real" server's performance
be? We have spec'd dual Athlon MP 2200+ CPUs, a 3ware 7506-12
controller with 12 200gb Western Digital drives, and 4gb of RAM.
(Whole thing is $6,000!!) Thing is, I don't think the RAID would be
much faster (writing) than the existing IDE drive. I'd hate to blow
six grand and find out it doesn't perform any better.
Has anyone dealt with a...

I am running compiz fusion with the standard show-off settings (cube with skydome and all that jazz) and I want to run Elders Scrolls IV: Oblivion but I don't know how. I made a fresh install via DVD (backup mind you) and run it through wine. The menu pops up (asking if I want to play, uninstall, exit, etc.) and I click play but the window pops up for a second and leaves. Could compiz be the
