Building a Back Blaze style POD
...nce here are a few links: http://blog.backblaze.com/2009/09/01/petabytes-on-a-budget-how-to-build-cheap-cloud-storage/ and http://cleanenergy.harvard.edu/index.php?ira=Jabba&tipoContenido=sidebar&sidebar=science There is room for 45 drives in the case (technically a few more). 45 x 1tb 7200rpm drives is really cheap, about $60 each. 45 x 1.5tb 7200rpm drives are about $70 each. 45 x 2tb 7200rpm drives are about $120 each 45 x 3tb 7200rpm drives are about $180-$230 each (or more, some are almost $400) I have question before I commit to building one and I was hoping to get advice. 1....

Hard disk recomendation for a software raid 5 array. Does Linux Software Raid support/interacts well with TLER enabled disks.
Hi people, I am building a cheap remote rsync backup server using a software raid 5 array of 4 500GB disks. What I have available on the market is: 1. HITACHI GST Deskstar T7K500 500GB 7200rpm 16MB cache Serial ATA II-300 2. SEAGATE Barracuda 7200.10 with NCQ 500GB 7200rpm 16MB cache Serial ATA II-300 3. Western Digital 500GB SATAII RAID EDITION Caviar SE16 7200rpm 8.9ms 16MB cache I am tempted to use the Western Digital Raid Edition as it has 5 years of warranty. However I found out t...

slog/L2ARC on a hard drive and not SSD?
Hi, Out of pure curiosity, I was wondering, what would happen if one tries to use a regular 7200RPM (or 10K) drive as slog or L2ARC (or both)? I know these are designed with SSDs in mind, and I know it''s possible to use anything you want as cache. So would ZFS benefit from it? Would it be the same? Would it slow down? I guess it would slow things down, because it would be trying to rea...

CentOS 7 and Areca ARC-1883I SAS controller: JBOD or not to JBOD?
...riences about ARC-1883I SAS controller with CentOS7? I am planning to have RAID1 setup and I am wondering if I should use the controller's RAID functionality which has 2GB cache or should I go with JBOD + Linux software RAID? The disks I am going to use are 6TB Seagate Enterprise ST6000NM0034 7200rpm SAS/12Gbit 128 MB If hardware RAID is preferred, the controller's cache could be updated to 4GB and I wonder how much performance gain this would give me? Thanks! Peter

[Off Topic, kind of] eMachine model T5254
...raffairs.com. I didn't take the time to do a thourgh search so may have missed some. Red Hat hardware list does not have one eMachine listed. I went to eMachine's home page and found the following: AMD Athlon? BE-2350 dual-core processor NVIDIA? GeForce? 6100 2048MB DDR2 dual-channel 320GB 7200rpm SATA II 16x DVD?R/RW SuperMulti drive High-performance 15-in-1 digital media card reader 6-channel (5.1) high-definition audio They do not list the manufacturer/model of the media card reader and audio. dovecot replication (active-active) - server specs
...mailbox/user and for the time being 2 dovecot proxies for the user connections (IMAP/POP). (later after the migration from the old system to the new, dovecot director instead of proxies, for caching reasons). we've got 2 new fileservers, they have each SSD HDDs for "new-storage" and 7200rpm SATA HDDs on RAID 5 with 10 TB for "alt-storage" 32 GB RAM per Server Do you have some tips for the system? Do you believe 32 GB RAM are enough for one fileserver each and have you experience with the I/O Waiting problem with huge amounts of Data on the alt-storage? Could there be issues...

OT - small hd recommendation
...probably didn't take advantage of any of the advanced settings such as stripe size, cluster size, etc. I am using XFS. As part of the potential upgrade, I'm considering changing to RAID6 - seems a bit more efficient use of space. I see no reason for SSD - I think a set of reasonable 7200rpm drives should be just fine. What I don't know is, compared to my current 4 drive RAID10 with SATA 1.5, would even a single SATA 3 drive be comparable in terms of seek performance? Should I stick with the RAID-10? -- Daniel

[help] How to speed up compilation?
...#39;cout' on clang. So, based on my understanding on your comment, it may be natural to have long compilation time. My machine has Intel Xeon(R) CPU E31230 @ 3.20GHz * 8 with 8GM RAM, which is far behind the recommended build environment ( Intel Core i7-4770K CPU @ 3.50Hz, 16 GM RAM, and a 1TB 7200RPM HDD or SSD, ref : https://blogs.s-osg.org/an-introduction-to-accelerating-your-build-with-clang/ ) Do you think it would be great help if I upgrade my machine? I've wanted to upgrade it at some point, but I haven't find right excuse to tell my boss. haha Thank you so much! On Tue, Oct 18,...

A few general questions
Hi All; I ran Linux as my main laptop OS for several years, then I got into a mac shop and bought a macbook. The macbook is ok but it just doesn't cut it per productivity so I've ordered another laptop (a 64bit laptop with 8G of memory expandable to 16G and 2 internal 320G 7200rpm drives) I'll be loading Linux as soon as the machine arrives from Dell. Here's my questions: 1) Are there any published plans for CentOS to support KDE4, or is there a way to upgrade CentOS to KDE4 ? 2) Does anyone know if Kpilot is working with Palm Centro phones ? Is there a bette...

They are intended for bulk secondary storage, archives, backups and such. you said you have a number of virtual machines all attempting to access this raid10 at once? I'm not surprised that it is slow. You're probably limited by random IO/second, that raid likely does around 250 rand...

Software RAID1 Drives

I ordered the first two thinking 2 drives in the raid array would be sufficient but later decided its a long drive to the server so I would rather have 3 drives and ordered a third in accidentally did not get EXACT same thing. So I'm hoping you dear readers will send me some tips for increasing ext3 performance. The system is using an Areca hardware raid controller with 5 7200RPM SATA disks. The RAID controller has 128MB of cache and the disks each have 8MB. The cache is write-back. The system is Linux 2.6.12 on amd64 with 1GB system memory.
