Graceful degradation of signal
...cket loss, it would be really nice if it sounded like a 96kbs signal, not a choppy 128kbs. Short question: is this possible and feasible? Extended question/scenario: It is of course easy to achieve if we are unconcerned about the absolute quality. Just define a 128kbs stream to be a 2-redundant 64kbs stream, and voila, we have graceful degradation. That's none to nice tho. That's still an all-or-nothing affair. Instead, we'd like to have the property of the codec that it be possible to separate the encoded signal into "quality shells" (to invent a term). A necessary pro...

Kernel Error with Icecast
I currently have Icecast 2.3.1 running with Darkice on a Fedora Core 4 box (with the 2.6.14 kernel). We have three streams running (all mp3) @ 128kbs, 64kbs, and 24kbs. I am consistently seeing the following error: kernel: Unable to handle kernel paging request at virtual address ffffffff It does appear to be icecast causing the error. Oddly, when this first started showing up, it would crash icecast entirely - meaning I couldn't get any stre...

ICES with MP3Pro?
Does anyone know if this is possible? Not sure if there is a hack that would work with this. I know the free mp3pro encoder works @ 64kbs... I don't know if anything supports this yet or not. Sound clip with encoder issue.
...a quiet passage with a few interesting things going on sonicly. I suggest you first encode the file at 64kbps. The problem occurs at all bitrates, but is most audible at the lower ones. The encoded file introduces an artifact that sounds remarkably like a blown speaker. Once you have heard it at 64kbs (it is very obvious,) go ahead and try the highest bitrate. The noise is much more subdued, but it is still there. If you listen _real_ closely to the original, you can hear the very quiet sound in the background that is likely tripping the encoder up. It almost sounds like a cat purring. Hop...

It starts loading and stops at time 00:01. The display shows a 192kbs 32kHz file for the 64kbs stream. I'll never hear anything. Streaming .mp3 and local .ogg files work fine though. How to use a data T-1?
Depends what you want to do! Do you want to do VoIP over that T1 to a provider or IP telephones? Do you want to hook up to the PSTN through that T1 as 24 voice channels, through a T1 card on your asterisk? If you want to use the T1 as 24 voice channels, the Telco is going to have to re-provision the T1 as a voice T1, because currently, presumably it is one big channel of data. You could have

Samba async performance - bottleneck or bug?
...t, running a clean Debian 10 Buster install. However, when doing the exact same speedtest command listed above from the Debian 10 VM that has that exact same CIFS share mounted, I only get 35MB/s max speeds. On my Windows 10 machine, using a 700MB folder filled with thousands of files between 16 - 64KBs, I get worse speeds even - hovering around 15MB/s and completing the task in about 60 seconds. To clarify - these are all hosted on the same ZFS dataset, which transforms sync writes into async writes. My question is 1) how can I get Samba to write these to RAM (async) for much faster speeds? What is the highest quality codec I can use for recording voice messages?
I have looked at the codec's available but I don't know how get the highest quality recorded message. If a user calls in over the normal telephone network is this limited to the carriers codec or the codec at the asterisk side? Would I get a higher quality result using VoIP rather than the normal network? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Fats.

Just thought i'd say thanks to Monty and everyone else for giving us this brilliant codec, even perhaps if it isn't done yet ;) Keep up the good work! My poorly tuned ears can't really tell the difference between (proper) CD quality and a .ogg at ~64Kbs, although i've only tried encoding a bunch of Beatles songs so far. Although there seem to be a few not quite distingushable problems with songs like Yellow submarine (Which has a bunch of different instruments/etc) http://www.freesklyarov.org - Free Dmitry! Spectral band replication
...the current statement of Thomson multimedia. Thomson multimedia says MP3PRO 64 kbps sounds like MP3 at 128 kbps. Thomson is marketing MP3PRO as a technology for doubling the capacity of portable MP-equipment. Thomson: "The new codec, dubbed "mp3PRO", provides 128kbs performance at a 64kbs encoding rate, nearly doubling the digital music capacity of typical flash memory. " -- http://www.thomsonmultimedia.com/vus/04/042/01/090101.htm I am trying here to determine a proper level of skepticism. I've seen double blind results for MP3PRO at 24 kbps vs MP3 at 32 kbps.
